Default Freon Tank = $1000

I went to Metro Nissan today to get my car serviced and told them that my air conditioning stopped putting out cold air for about a month. When I go to pick it up they tell me that a rock demolished my freon tank and thats why i stopped getting cold air in my air conditioning. They quoted me about $1000 to replace and fix it. I'm extremely pissed because insurance says they might not cover it...but I think they should. I'm thinking about getting a grille and the underbody covering to prevent any further damage like this. Has this happened to anyone before?

Shouldnt the design on the car prevent this?
Cant it be replaced under warranty?

i dont know what the service guy was saying but he used the words freon tank and coolant liquid. i just know that my air conditioning doesnt work and something must be pretty jacked up to make it not work.

check your refrigirant pressure first. you can get a guage from autozone or alike. If low, try to recharge with 134a, check level again after a couple of days, you might have a leak somewhere. if pressure is ok then the dealer is probably just guessing or trying to rip you off. that drier tank is strong (holds 100psi), i wouldnt think it will break with just pebbles on the freeway. AC systems are very complicated, one thing goes wrong the whole system does not work and very costly to repair. I would eliminate possible problems first before paying $1000. other things to check is the compressor clutch, HVAC and temp sensor.

unless the condensor is damaged (only thing a rock could hurt) that price is way out of line. Go somewhere else. A/C systems are simple, and the car is too new to expect anything to go out.
