Default shifting gear w/o clutch?

a while ago, I accidently switched from 1st to 2nd gear w/o pressing clutch..
I was going oops s#it! but it shifted so smooth w/o any grinding.
I shifted at around 1700rpm I guess I was lucky it was at perfect rpm or something.. It was interesting.. but something I wouldn't want to try again

Yea you can shift without the clutch in any gear, except into first, well at least I have never done it. Our company car (PT Crusier) I hardly use the clutch. I don't do it much in the Z, because 1. I care more about the Z and 2. I can't seem to get the timing right so its not jerky in the Z.

Side note: Except for into 1s, and 1st to 2nd on my FZ6, I never use the clutch.

Funny story...I was in Taiwan a few years back and took a cab to somewhere...i noticed that the guy was driving with his left leg up on the seat while shifting gears...i was like wtf...how'd he do that? This was a beat up toyota/honda from the early 90's and he was driving around in pretty crazy traffic...upshifting/downshifting all w/o the clutch...at the time, i didn't know you could do that, but if you match revs perfectly, it could be done...he reminds me of that guy from Initial D...driving all day for work but doesn't realize he could have been the next Michael Schumacher lol

Yes you can shift without disengaging the clutch, You certainly do not have to disengage the clutch to get the lever out of gear. Just pull it.

To get the car in gear is a bit tricky. Push the shift **** gently while increasing RPM. This an example of rev matching at the extreme.

BTW the above technique can be modified a bit for drag racing.

This is done in diesel rigs all the time i do it in my truck while towing to reduce clutch wear, i would not recomend it for high performance transmissions, but for tractor trailers it works great

Just pulling on it at random won't be very easy. It helps to be on the throttle WHILE applying slight pressure to the shifter, and then letting off the throttle. It will come out of gear much easier. I still personally recommend using the clutch.

I'm not sure I follow. Upshifting would require DECREASING RPM, unless you're talking about letting the RPM fall and then hit it on the way back up. Downshifting would require increasing RPM as you state. Downshifting without the clutch is more stressful on the transmission than upshifting, but the fact of the matter remains that our syncro-mesh transmissions are not designed to be shifted into gear without using the clutch. Can it be done? Certainly. Should it? Certainly not.

Yeah, if you like being SLOW and have a deathwish for your transmission. Even powershifters use the clutch(not that powershifting is "acceptable"). An amateur/drag racer may swear by it, but that doesn't pull much weight AFAIC.

Exactly.

We have synchros for a reason, smooth engagement.

What happens is when you press the gas the transmission moves, when you shift the transmission moves back and it forces itself in.

I used to do that when I rode Kawasaki Ninja. I'm not sure it would work on Z since it is somewhat rough to shift from 1st to 2nd using clutch. I might give it a try though.

Just tried it for the first time today. Did it quickly right when the revs were matched and it went in. -- it wasn't smooth as using the clutch though...i'll stick with the clutch

i do it all the time when slowly cruising through my development...really smoothly too (1000-2000rmp shifts)

try this: you'll need a flat, clear road...quiet neighborhood road

get speed up to about 35mph and 6th gear
let the car roll (no brakes - no clutch)
when the tach gets to about 1000 rpms you should be able to disengage 6th effortlessly and shift into 5th (you may have to SLIGHTLY TAP the gas pedal to get into 5th smoothly)
once again, when the tach gets a tad under 1000rpm (say ~950rpm), disengage 5th and go into 4th.
repeat until you get to 2nd.
do not go into 1st...gear ratio is too drastic of a jump from 2nd into 1st gear.

btw, there is absolutely no good reason for doing this...just boredom

Thank you for the details. And no I do not recommend no-clutch shifting for day-to-day driving.
