engine 101
If you truely want to understand how a car works:
1. Buy a cheap used car with lots of aftermarket support. You should probably learn how to build a stock car first. Working with pre 1975's is nice, but they will cost you a pretty penny for the popular models. If you have to go modern, go above 1990's. If you try to do an 80's car, your asking for vacuum house nightmares.
2. Buy the FACTORY service manual.
3. Buy a long list of tools, engine stand, engine lift.
4. Plenty of beer for a friend that knows what he is doing.
5. Bribe someone in letting them use a garage space for a good 6 months minimum.
If you don't have the money and space:
If you absolutely want to just be the text book type, just get a service manual and read on how engine works: http://www.howstuffworks.com/
