So if the purpose for running high octane gas is because of the compression ratio, for those who lower that ratio to turbo/supercharge the car should not have to worry about it? I run premium, because the ownners manual says run premium, and my luck something would happen to the car and the Nissan service department would be out there with some alien probe checking the octane of te gas.
No... the static compression might be lower for forced induction but the effective compression can still be high.
Exactly. HUGE cylinder pressures are experienced on FI cars. The higher the octane you run, the more power you can extract from it with boost, timing, and fuel curve.
Heat also plays a huge factor with detonation. My 350 is basically stock, so 91 on the street is fine, however, I have heard it detonate on a hot day while stuck in traffic and going up a grade. If it was on 87 or 89, this would occur more often. That's also why I run 100 octane at track events. The last thing you want to worry about is listening for detonation. The 100 octane keeps everything in check, and is very cheap insurance.
