That reminds me of my first few weeks with the Z. Coming from a 165hp AWD Suby, doubling the power and halving the traction made for some interresting situations. I'd take off from a light and wouldn't get the expected acceleration. I spend a couple of seconds wondering what was wrong, all the while leaving double tire marks behind me...

With practice, you'll learn to feel when the rear end is about to loose traction . You can then play cats and mouses with the TCS and see how much wheel spin it'll allow before cuting in!

 

i have really bald tires on my z and the other day i was on the higway going 60 in hard rain and i stepped on the gas to go up to like 80 i didn floor it or anything and my car got a lil sideways and lost traction. i tryed it again to see if it was jsut a fluke and it did it again, after that i pulled over and waited till it stopped raining

 

Curious to know your opinion on these differences? I have a friend with a performance model and tells me the base feels lighter, but I thought it was only mine due to my mods and not a general idea. Sorry for the hijack.

 

Don't kid yourself. The base model does NOT spin as easily as the other models because it doesn't have lsd. The inside wheel spins while the other does not loose grip. Trust me, I drift my car and its hard to cause a drift because the inside wheel starts spinning. Donuts are next to impossible. Other models with lsd, once you step on it, you are goping to drift easily because both wheels loose traction. You're only savior is TCS or VDC.

However, if buy a base and put an aftermarket lsd on it, you better know how to drive!

 

Normally I turn the VDC off by habit however I'm starting to leave it on more unless I plan to drive spirited. In the right conditions (wet street + oily road etc.) the Z is easy to spin around largely due to all the torque.

 

Yeah I have a base and its pretty hard to break traction....Of course when the rear starts slidiing i know how to correct it....

my lsd goes in next week so we'll see how good i drive then

I love hanging the rear out around corners. Its fun on faster corners.

 

Just be careful around the corner guys. I know I've learned my lesson. It's kinda hard too late to counter steer if you already fishtail too hard. RWD can be dangerous when it rains. I lost traction all the times but never spin like last night. Scary experience.

 

Been there too... right after I bought my car. Traded up from a 130HP FWD Mazda Protege5. Then I made the best investment... HPDE... learned so much about me and the car.

 

Depending on how you lost traction and how far it went before you noticed it, there was nothing you could have done. Except make it worst.

It’s possible (and easy) to get the rear end to stand out with wheel spin. Then you’d need to lift a bit to match the wheel speed to the car’s speed. Be careful as the car will bite and most certainly snap towards the other direction.

If, instead of lifting from the gas, you completely let go of it, you’ll basically lock up the rear, transfer plenty weight on the front and keep on rotating. Very similar to pulling the e-brake. Now, you wouldn’t do THAT in a spin would you ?

On the other hand, if the rear end standing out is the result of a weight transfer to the front (less traction on the rear but NO WHEEL SPIN), the thing to do will be to apply some gas to get the some weight on the rear and regain balance. Don’t mash the throttle or else you’ll just spin the wheels and destroy what little traction you had on the rear…

 

I almost always drive w/o my tcs on unless it has just rained or is raining really hard. I turn it off because it basically robs power on take off and unless the roads are slick theres no need to really control wheel spin. When I first got it I never turned it off until I learned the car. Now I turn it off and punch when I'm going from a stop into a turn but thats because I learned how it "loses" control. I have had it happen recently when I turned it off and forgot to turn it back on because it started raining and I was coming out of my apartment after pickin up something and when I started to pull out even though I wasn't crazy enough to punch it like normal because of the fresh rain I still lost complete control and my whole rear end kicked out left with me almost going completely sideways, then I let of the gas tapped the brakes and steered slightly to the left and then went almost the complete opposite until I finally regained control. That was the closest I had ever come to trashing my car. Definately wasn't expecting it because I was feathering out of the turn so I wouldn't do exactly what happened but then again our road get really oily when we haven't had rain in like forever. then after I came out of another entry way from throwin some movies in the drop box I pulled into the little thing in the middle of the road and slowed down to see if it was clear and then accelerated only to have a milder version of what happened earlier happen again but this time when the back end went out right it almost clipped some SUV on the other part of the median type thing. Only after the second time did I remember I had tcs off. So I can definately tell a difference in bad weather with it off. In good weather its fun to let it go because its really predictable how its going to lose control and reign her back in

 

Yeah, I remember when I first got the TT installed and I decided to turn off VDC in the rain at work. The car rotated so fast there was nothing I could do about it. I wouldn't do stupid stuff in the rain anyway but I just wanted a sobering experience to make sure I wouldn't do anything stupid.

 

i have a base model and haven't had any problems. if you know how to handle your car, it shouldn't be a problem. just know the car's limits.

I had the same thing happen to me, but I knew the corner was going to be dangerous because there was a median on the right side of the road that I didn't want to hit. I waited until the car was straightened out and then hit the gas, but it STILL fishtailed, and I ended up hitting a median...freakin bent a radius arm and had to do without my car for 1 1/2 weeks waiting for parts I tried to be conservative and I still fishtailed...oh well, lesson learned I guess. Now I just drive like a granny around corners, for now atleast.

Z just had too much hp and torque for cornern especially from the dig...
