let us not forget S60R = AWD

porsche, viper, cadi, vette = RWD

Mosport race = very wet

Your age & who's paying for the car doesn't have any bearing in who will win.

You'll win, trust me. Just make sure to race him while his daughter is in your car. Oh, and without a seatbelt on her either.

if you get by pops volvo your probably not worthy of marrying his daughter.

if you do beat him you probably aren't worthy either because you're a crazy driver that will race with others while his girl is in the car.

lose lose situation. just admit his car is better and be on his good side.

I'd bet the Volvo is auto...and if you've got a MT, should be the Z FTW!!

Could be that Pops is trying to test you... i.e. how safe you'd drive with Daddy's Little Girl...

???

The At Speed S60 R had only raced 4 other races before Mosport this season. If you include Mosport, that is 1 first place finish, 2 other podium finishes and a top 10 finish. How do you call that losing? Yes, the rain did contribute to it's large lead but it wasn't wet during the qualifying season or at the other races. Yes, this is it's first GT Class win but, they have only been racing in the GT Class for the last 2 years. The Volvo has a long history of winning in the Touring Class. Bernard Franke drove his S60 to 7 podium finishes in 4 months just recently

Too many people underestimate the R, including overzealous M3 drivers. That's fine by me. I got tired of wanna-be street racers with visions of F&F glory trying to race me on the streets when I had the Z.

The shifter feels accurate, and each of the three suspension settings is useful (some less so in Michigan). The car even looks cool, especially its blue gauges.

...the R's performance numbers are right on the heels of the Germans', which speaks volumes about how far Volvo has come with the R, not to mention the leap from the T5 and AWD. And keep in mind that for the R's money the only other sedans in the same league are the Audi A4 3.0 Quattro, the BMW 330i Performance Package, the Cadillac CTS, and the Infiniti G35, all of which would become well acquainted with the R's taillights.

And thanks to the continuously variable valve timing, efficient turbocharger and twin intercoolers, throttle response is excellent with minimal turbo lag.

i understand ur point and i give props to volvo for the R . But i just dont see it making waves in the auto world because one volvo doesnt advertise it as it should be. 2) its not well covered as a performance machine because of volvos saftey image. Yes in the straights i believe volov got the turbo and responce time perfected because theres is little to no lag in the R. I think it came at a price though with its tempermental ecu having difficulties with a/f at summer temps. Thus the volovs tend to do lesser then usual even in gt racing. There great cars. i dnt knw if a r can persuad anyone from buying a z or a m3 but then again in a world where a srt 4 can spank 40 k cars its glad to have options

Yeah, you're right, the R's turbo is very tempermental when it gets really hot. Aftermarket cooling can fix that. I personally wouldn't get an R without additional cooling if I lived in the desert. When the temps get close to 100+ degrees, a stock R is closer to six seconds than five seconds. When it came time to move on from the Z, I personally chose the R over the M3 because the cost of the M3 to me didn't justify the performance difference and a $1k chip mod would give me better performance than the M3. In Europe Volvo has more of a performance image than it does here in the US because of its successes in the touring championships. In the US, the R is Volvo's attempt to give its image more of a performance edge. They definately need to stress the performance with safety aspect. Their latest marketing campaign is "Volvo Cares" and "Volvo For Life". Pretty ho-hum and not necessarily awe inspiring. They need to have commercials like those new VWs showing people walking away from crashes or BMW type commercial with them zooming through canyons. I personally would like to see a commercial where a soccer mom with a car load of groceries takes on a Mustang in a V70 R after dropping off the kids.

dmullane,
If you're seriously going to race the old man. Make sure he's stock and you race him on a hot day and the advantage will be on your side. If you do race, take it some place safe. Good luck and don't make the dad lose too bad. If he's chip modded, even an FI Z will have it's work cut out.

Just in case anyone still has images of the boxy Volvos. This is the S60 R.
