Default Freeway debris...

Some luck I've got. Just bought my '06 Base 350z, 6mt, two weeks ago, and I was on my way to San Diego last night (to pick up my tail light vinyls that I screwed up installing :P), on the 5 freeway, and I see this giant flat hunk of metal fly out from underneath a van that was in front of my as I was changing lanes. Well, I hear the thing hit the front of my car and after I get out to check it and there is a huge dent on left part of the front bumper. 2500 miles and already something goes wrong. I'll post pics as soon as I'm home later today... Just pisses me off that this kind of stuff happens. But I suppose it could have been worse... could have hit my windshield or messed up more than just the front bumper I guess. Eh.
Just thought I'd vent to people who can truly empathize all the others who have seen have been like "oh it's not that bad". This is my brand new baby .

I feel your pain... not more then an hour after taking delivery of my 06 base, a rock flies up and puts a nice nick in the hood.

I have touch-up paint but I'm afraid to mess with it.

That sux man!

One time me and my 4 friends were riding in this girls benz on the highway but her b/f was driving. We were following behind another car on the highway and all of a sudden from under their car (they just ran over it and didnt slow or nothing) was all this huge black semi-hard plastic stuff. You couldnt really tell what it was cause we were moving so fast but we ran over it and it got caught on the rear axle. The car behind us however decided he could swerve and miss all the stuff but he yanked it too hard and when he tried to counter-steer he ended up sliding sideways and clipping a mustang in the rear end before sliding into a guard rail.

It was really freaky to actually look back and see all that go down. The scariest part was we were in rush hour traffic. However where they were happened to be a gap but behind them you could see just waves of traffic speeding about 60MPH at them. I swear i thought there was about to be a pileup. Thankfully that didnt happen! We pulled over and both drivers were ok and i spent FOREVER trying to pull that damn black stuff out from under the car.

I hope it doesnt cost too much to fix and stay safe out there!!!

oh, and pics pics pics! LoL.

Smacked a piece of a tire today with my front lip at about 70 mph on the freeway. Black mark evident, but paint looks good and no crack. Whew!! I always try and leave extra space when on the freeway to avoid such obstacles, but this one got me.

i've had my share of hitting flying debri through out the years besides rock chips and beer bottles. My front windshield was completely smashed one time by a flying object. My 300ZX ran over a quart of oil which fell off a pickup truck on the freeway once. It was a PITA to clean up the oil splashed between the engine and the firewall.

A couple years ago, driving my Jetta at night, I tagged a wheel and tire--cost me a water pump and high pressure line.

Just a few months ago I was able to dodge a flying matress in the Z!

Is it just me or are the roads now covered with more debris than ever?

I'm from Houston and I remember seeing road debris on the freeway once in a while back when I first drove; 1999. Now I see it everyday. I see more and more people driving beat up pickup trucks carrying crap that is barely secured in the beds. Trees, Tree branches, twigs, scrap metal, wood, carpet, etc.

I blame those drivers! and the 18 wheel drivers who rethread their tires and then the thread comes off on the freeway!

When I saw this thread I knew it happened in CA. People just don't know how to pack their trucks safely here. Sorry to hear about the car. I've had some debirs take out a rear tire on my G.

I had a bad experience about 2 weeks after getting my Z too, no damage thankfully, just a mess. I was headed home from work on the 73 toll road and this POS 1970s Dodge truck threw a rod right in front of me. I saw a huge cloud of smoke and steam so I changed lanes and passed him then realized that the smoke was full of vaporized oil that coated the entire exterior of my brand new Z. It wasn't too hard to clean but I still wasn't happy about it.

I've had my '06 for a month now. Two weeks ago while first in line at a stoplight, this idiot makes a left turn right in front of an oncoming car; gets his tail light/bumper smacked at 50 miles an hour. Debris everywhere, suddenly a large red piece of tailight lense bounces off my hood. In hindsight, half a second slower and the hit would have spun him head on into me. Ended up with only a 1/4 inch scratch. Still pissed me off. Then yesterday, driving home on the freeway I hear a loud crack just as a rock gets thrown up and hits my windshield, didn't crack it but left a nice divot right in my line of sight. It couldn't be in a worse place to see continously. Oh well, try as hard as we do to keep them pristine just ain't gonna happen to a daily driver.

your absolutely right, only in California lol.
Mattresses, ladders, tire treads, hubcaps, roadkills, tomatos, chairs, baby diapers, driveshafts, chunks of autobody parts ...etc.. etc...you name it. All the money we pay in annual vehicle license fees and other taxes, i don't think our money is spent wisely. This ain't the third world you know.

Driving on the freeway just plain sucks. I was driving on the freeway last Friday and within 10 mins a damn rock smacked my windshield and left a big chip. Hell, I had a f***ing hubcap crack the windshield of my Accord. That one left me speechless.

Hey Max, I had similar thing happen to me about 6 months ago. Was on a motorway flyerover (very heavy rush hour traffic at about 100kms ), I saw 2 hunks of metal come flying out of the back of a truck as the doors slammed open, truck was miles in front of me. Debri flew towards my Z, no where I could go, biggest bit I managed to avoid, I still don't know how, 2nd bit got my bonnet, left very deep, sizeable gauges and a dent. I was so angry, the driver obviously realised, darted across lanes, wasn't signwritten vehicle either. So guess who got to pay for that. But at least it wasn't the bonnet aye.

Definitely sympathise.
