Default Dealer charging for recall work?

My bro called my local dealer to make an appt for my fuel line work. The service rep found out that I have Borla TD exhaust on my Z. He mentioned that they will have to charge $135 in order to reinstall/realign the exhaust after the recall is done. WTF??? I realize that the Borla is an aftermarket part, but since the dealer needs to remove the exhaust in order to correct a defect in the car, shouldn't the dealer charge Nissan NA for the extra labor? After all, I paid my own money to get the exhaust installed and perfectly aligned in the first place, and I have to go through all the trouble to get the recall done. Also, I think my tech can install 2 sets of exhausts for $135!

Has this happened to anyone else? What do you guys think I should do? Go to another dealer?

Absurd. The Borla exhaust is no more time consuming to remove and install then the OEM exhaust.

OEM = 3 pieces. Borla = 17 pieces. Dealer probably doesn't want the hassle of having to get the tips lined back up correctly or worry about complaints of it leaking or creaking because they didn't re-install it correctly.

Try another dealer or put your stock exhaust back on and take it in then. This is just one of the realities you have to live with when modifying your car.

They shouldn't charge you any more to take it off. Tell them you will fill out the survey badly if they do. The owner will have a fit about that one.

i say go look around other dealers. wow 17 pecies is alot compared to 3. so it could be labor charge. if its a good dealer then after reinstalling the exhaust they will do pressure check to see if there are any leaks.

In my opinion it's nissan's fault for putting poor quality lines on the car to start with. I work for nissan but that is just my opinion, regardless if it has 1, 10 or 1000 pieces.

Thanks for all the comments...I will speak with the service rep tomorrow to see if he can help me at least reduce the labor charges.

You shouldn't have to pay a penny. Take it to Performance Nissan.

My apologies. I forgot that the Borla comes in 20 pieces.

You spoke with me...

The Borla Exhaust is like a connector set with 12 seperate pipes with slip together pipes and clamps...

It is a rattle box / exhaust leak waiting to happen...

The angles of the pipe have to be set perfect and H-Pipe has to be clampped together to keep from leaking... I have seen people with the whole thing welded together to keep it from leaking...

In order to remove the rear suspension member the exhaust from the y-pipe back must be removed... in this case, it is the complete borla exhaust... To remove the exhaust and have a factory certified technician who will be performing your Warranty Work re-install the exhaust and then make sure there are no exhaust leaks or rattles etc etc, is extra labor then the warranty service allows for...

Please feel free to have your "Mechanic" remove the exhaust and put a stock one on and there will be no extra charges...

BTW... We are not charging for the Recall work, but for the aftermarket exhaust removal and re-installation...

If the exhaust had a similar design to stock (Like NISMO or Greddy SP2 or HKS WSII etc) all that would be paid extra is the replacement gasket since NISSAN only pays for the OE Gasket to be replaced...

the last two cars the dealers charged me for warranty works...i sold and got rid of those cars rightaway to avoid hassles down the road. i swear i'll never buy any more cars from those manufacturers ever again. i won't name names, but one starts with V and the other one with M from the far east.

I understand your frustration but you can't expect a dealership to eat the labor charges because

1) Nissan installed a faulty fuel line
2) You installed a complex aftermarket exhaust.

Your complaint should be with Nissan (remember dealerships are individually owned and are only given a fix amount of money from Nissan to make warranty repairs and recalls)

I remember seeing a few threads about the borla exhaust and fuel line recall, you might do a search but I'm pretty sure they ended up having to pay extra also.

This is one of the problems with putting aftermarket parts on your car, you could replace the car with Lexus, BMW, Honda, Subaru, etc... they would charge you extra also for the same problem...

I'm not saying its fair, its just the way it is... I guess I've modified enough cars over the years I've just accepted the fact that if you install aftermarket parts on your cars there could be problems with warranties and recall work..
