Here's a guy that autocrosses an LS6 powered RX-7 in our region. Check out his website and the video:

Maybe I should try a swap - but then what would I do with my Titan?

FC & FD RX7's with LSx engines are beast. Basically no weight difference and tons of power.

350z with an LSx T56 combo would be badass... I bet it could be done for around $30k no problem. If you do a lot of the work your self, mid 20's

High mileage 03'
LS1/T56
Custom driveshaft
Custom motor mounts
Headers / exhaust
Fuel system
Modded harness

Lots of swap info here: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=28

Cheapest I've seen any Z's are around $18,000 for an '03. Where have I been shopping for engines? I haven't. If you plan to buy a crap take out from a wrecked car and slap that in you could. Personally if I was going to do all this work to a car I'd go with a fresh rebuilt engine for around $4,000. I'd say you could probably buy a good engine tranny combo for around $2,000, put another $1,500 into rebuilding it, $2,000 for a set of high flow heads, $500 for a cam and valve train upgrade, $400 for headers, $1,900 for a Moser 12 bolt rear with axles, $200 for an intake, $400 for plugs, wires, and coils, and $1,200 for wheels and tires.

Sure you could buy a '98 LS1 from a junk yard with 200k miles on it with a weak rear end and a tranny that grinds.

Do it right or do it cheap?

why change the rear... you can just use the stock irs.

plus you have to take into account what you can sell the VQ and tranny for, that helps offset your cost...

There are LS1's with T56's on ebay for around $4k... with under 50k miles

cheap.

and a moser 12 bolt you are talking about a lot more modification, clearance issues, and the whole thing of "wtf do you NEED a 12 bolt for?" LOL, that is rediculous. overkill.

and you could get a Z sans engine for 11-14k if you want a non accident car. but when you go putting all that money in, it loses the point of the swap. if you go out and spend 20k on a LS1, you could NOT and buy a vette... or turbo the Z and not have to worry about all the problems...

you haven't even talked about engine wiring, guages... electronics... throttle control.... accessories.... engine control... gear ratios...

and then, modifying firewall for the tranny, modifying rear end to fit diff, modifying axles to fit, mounting fabrication.... cooling system....

you are overlooking alot of things that push the cost up, without even getting into heads/cams packages... and will these heads fit? some are higher creating clearance issues in the small engine bay

I would rather get an engine in that runs then modify it.... there are going to be so many electrical problems..... gotta work that out, then worry about more power.

out of the box, with custom headers and a aftermarket custom exhaust and intake you should be at 350whp more than enough to start with.

Instead of dropping a V8 in a 350Z, just get a C6.

I would go with the Moser 12 bolt if I wanted to put down some serious power. Like I said earlier, if I was doign this I would do it right and not skimp on it or cut corners just to get it done. You could put a stock LS1 in but why go to all the trouble for a 350hp V8.

<-- Fellow Viper owner here. What have you done to your Viper, and why with a car like that would you want to spend time hacking up a 350z just to stuff an 8 cylinder in it. With that money, you could TT the Viper and have the slickest car on the planet!

but then you kill the IRS... the whole idea is to take light good handling car and give it some grunt. Why hurt one of the good aspects of the car, and spend a lot of money to put a solid axle and custom 3/4 link.

Majority of the RX7, 240sx, miata, bmw lsx swap project all retain the stock IRS, or a beefed up version.

My car was nothing special, I had a 01(****ty hyperucrackedit pistons) 708 cam from the 96,97 cars, belanger headers and borla exhaust. I sold the car because it was starting to get to many miles on it if I wanted to sell it for more than I payed for it. So I old it at 14k miles and I bought it with 9. It also became to much hastle for the simple fact I couldnt fill up with gas without getting 3 million questions. I plan on getting another one but it might be awhile, I have a supra that should dyno over 700whp next week. Dynod 601 this week with a slipping tq converter. We added a new tq converter, 272 cams, and 4 inch exhaust. I also didnt spray it ont he dyno either, which we plan on doing this time.

Honestly this was just a thought. I wanted to build a project car that was a little different. This is why Im asking about information.

You keep reading way into things. You made it sound like I would pay 7k for a stock ls1 out of a junkyard. For 7k there is alot of options thats all I was saying.

No, I said you could buy one from a junkyard for $2,000.

Sorry for being so performance minded on the LS1. I came from the LS1/LT1 world where we like to go fast, really fast.

The vq isnt that bad with a turbo. You cant really compare it to the supra bc they come stock turbo. that means internals are ready to go. so its like night and day.

+1, with the same amount invested in making the VQ built and twin turbo as the v8 swap, you could have a 700-800whp TT 350z with a much beefier powerband than your 700whp Supra.
