I had one 10" Bazooka (SAS) bass tube. It sounded awsome and it didn't take up much space the hatch area of my Z. Check out the sound they produce, at your local audio shop, before making that purchase.

I've had to boxed subs and they did put out pretty good sound. I just didn't like the amount of room that the box took up. The one bass tube put out just as much, if not more, bass as the box that had two 12" kicker subs in it.
By the way, I'm from Montgomery, Alabama (originally). I go back once a year or so...

Are you guys planning on simply replacing the stock sub or placing a box in the trunk? That will really eat up trunk space. Without a back seat, and no trunk, there isn't a lot of space to put your junk.
If you do put a box in the trunk, it'd be nice to retrofit the stock sub into a storage space.

I'm not going to put a box in the back of my new Z. I might upgrade to a better sub (behind the drivers seat) and maybe a amplifier/cross-over combo. I want to keep the car looking as 'stock' as possible. I had a Bazooka (SAS) bass tube in my 90' TT. I've got to keep enough room in my 350Z for my golf bag
I tried to spec out a sub that will fit under the struct bar, but looks like you can only fit 8's and 10's underneth it. You will have to face the subs either down or up, if you mount the sub to face the rear, there is not enough clearance. I want to transfer my current sub in my accord to the z, which is a JL 12w3, but I don't think it will fit. I think I'll probably have to go with 10's.
Also another thing to remember is, this is a hatchback, so that means the sound will be a lot louder than if you have a car with a trunk. Just something to consider.
Guess I won't know the setup until I get the car.....

I would expect given the cabin space of this car that a a good 10" with a very strong amp driving it would be more than sufficient, in all but extreme SPL cases. Depending on your budget, you might want to check out the new JL W7's. I haven't heard much on these, but if they follow along like most of JL's stuff they will live up to the hype. One of those with ~500watts pushing it, should work very nicely.

I have to agree with D C's assessment. In the past I've been tempted to get two subs instead of one because I'd think to myself that two has to be better than one, but, unless they are really spaced apart for imaging, i've found it's almost always better to feed one sub a lot of power than two a modest amount of power... plus it's typically cheaper and takes up less room. Sealed boxes usually take up a lot of room if you do it "right", but the bass response is much tighter... more for the audiophile than for a volumephile(?). www.crutchfield.com probably has some online articles about this stuff.. if you want something to read that isn't boringly comprehensive. The ultimate solution would be a band-pass box, which has both a sealed area and a vented area, but those are big too... I'd go with a tube... would probably have the most affect on your rear view mirror. Good luck in your search, I also want to get a nice system. My preference for cross-over is around 120 (M?)Hz... maybe a little less.
Deity,
"My preference for cross-over is around 120 (M?)Hz"
You were right without the M. The average human audible range is 20-20,000Hz. 120MHz would be 120,000,000Hz, not quite audible
Actually 120 Hz is a little high for the ideal low pass crossover point. 80 Hz would be a better choice. Less chance for vocals seeping into the sub channel.
