When I asked the same question on a general car forum, 9 out of 10 people told me to get an S2000 over the Z. Luckily, I'm hard headed and I didn't listen.
It depends what you think you get with the Z over the S2000. I think overall the S2000 is put together much better than the Z. There isn't that cheap factor in the interior. I came from a Honda background. Old car was a 95 Civic Si Hybrid (JDM B18C5 swap). I loved the way Honda's were built and how simplistic the engine layouts were. I later on I moved to a Z but looked at the S2000 very carefully. I love my Z but with the problems Nissan had with the car it's been a love hate relationship at times. I paid the Z off and by luck found a great deal on a S2000 that I couldn't pass. Funny thing is I love those 2 cars but I spend most my time in my daily driver, a 2005 Altima for banger...lol.

Just my two cents. I just went from an 01 S2K to an 03 Touring 6speed.

1. How important is convertible top?
2. How important is low end torque.
3. How comfortable do you want to be?

The S was fun to drive, but if I wanted to go out to dinner with my wife, we always took a different vehicle.
My S was broken into TWICE with the seats being stolen both times.
The Z is a more friendly daily driver, but hey both cars are nice.

And the most BORING reason for Z over S2000.....its a lot less likely to kill you in a roll over.

The Z can also be had with side curtian airbags.

Get the S2000. It's a much cooler car. I've driven both.

*cough* too many Z's *cough*

I think the S will be more fun, despite not being as fast and powerfl, because it's very lightweight and maneuverable.

Like some said, it's probably better build quality, it's not as common in NY (I've lived all around NY), but you better get a nice security system.

the S is very fun, but you HAVE to rev the hell out of it and you HAVE to buy the 9k reline 2000-03 or else it isn't really worth it. That is what the car is famous for...so if you don't buy a used 01-03 (2000 didn't have a glass back window), fugghedaboutit.

I also had the same problem as you , its really weird. Except I didnt like the look of the S2k with the top dropped and didnt see the point too much in getting a convertible if I would be wanting to drive the car with the top up most of the time. But you know what changed my mind for good and made me get the Z ? When I read the December 06 article in Modified Mag about the S2k . All I can say about that article is that the guy that test drove it said the thing had little to almost no torque down low . His main and only complaint about it was that it had no torque down low . The thing is built to redline at 8k rpm for a reason because it needs to inorder to actually bring something to the table in a race (eventually) . He pointed out it was a good car because it has average car performance for daily driving and good response when having an open road ahead of you. What I got out of that article was that , you wont be thrilled by it if you're not a fan of having to wait till youre at 6krpm to actually begin to haul .
Another thing that I saw was a video on streetfire of a stock S2k getting raped by a stock Blue 350Z . I also found the interior of the 350Z to be sexier.

Trust me man, I would go for the Z . I was blown away by the response the car gives right off the bat . At first it just begins to haul then all of a sudden you feel as though 10G's just knock you back and the car begins to feel as if it takes off the ground and flys by everything else on the road and when you slow down you feel like something just scared the **** out of you.

Check out http://www.edmunds.com. You should be able to negotiate that number down. S2ks are not selling well in general, and even worse in winter..only so many are crazy enough to put up with its quirks and bare sportscar nature.

A Grand Tourning Z without any extra major options will end up costing a couple grand more...but overall an easier car for most folks to live with on a daily basis.

i also looked into the z and the s2000. I'm a big guy so that was a deffinite factor. But the s2000 as stated before doesn't have much down low. The z is more of a beast in my opinion. I actually overheard a guy at a meet last month say that he bought an s2000 before the z and returned it after two or three days and bought himself a z

If u are not modding the car, then get a Z, it's alot better for daily driving. Plus stock for stock look the on the Z is better IMO. The S2k is a very nice track car though (curcuit) corners better then the Z but it takes more skill to drive it quick

I had a 2005 S2K for 10 months. Boy I lost some money when I traded that car in

I thought the interior of the S2000 was awful. It's functional, but that's about it. The quality of the switches and other interior pieces was worse than the 2006 Corolla I bought as my daily driver.

The S2000 I think is the only car I've ever gotten rid of that I had little to no "emotional" attachment to. It's a track-car and it's hard-core, but if you need anything beyond a weekend racer look elsewhere is my advice.

Okay I respect your opinion about the S2K standing alone, but do you really think the interior of the S2K is worse than the 350Z? I think Nissan cheaped out big time inside the Z.

I'm glad they cheaped out the Z, or else it would be $40K for one.

I like the 350Z cause its a four seater and has an option for a V8.

I've got both. An 05 S and an 06 Z.

I like them both but I will say that the S is more fun. I'll just go take a drive with the top down because its fun.

I get more "oh **** what that" look in the S.

As far as power, yes you have to rev it up but the fact is you can keep up with a Z stock for stock and get better handling in the corners.

Gas milage. I have no idea how anyone gets 26mpg in the city. I got around 19 and I get around 22 with the S and I always take it up to VTEC

Plus when you hit VTEC in 3rd and can break the backend loose going straight thats just fun.

I also have an invidia exhaust and it sounds awesome especially at WOT.

Build quality is absolutely better. It is more of a drivers car because you wear it.

I love the Z and the look of it. I think its a matter of opinion

Looks wise I like them both althogh the S is far rarer and generally gets more looks.

Either way they are both good cars. Although the S is more reliable on average especially concerning the top.

Plus you can get gears, ITB's and a few others for a few K and have a really fast light car.

Plus it is a great auto-x car.

We just bought the 05 ZR and love it looked at both . I'm big [fat fcka] .old fart also but the quality of interior and the leather on the seats along with the mesh in them love it !!! no burnt flesh also with a bad back and living where it gets cold love the heated seats. very quiet wind wise also . I went with 05 because figured they had the bugs out of it plus saved me big$$$ over the 06 and both were new. but if you want an 06 roadster i know a place that will ship and sell for 34k
pm if ya want info
