Hmmm...trying not to be too ignorant here. But...what is that and what does it stand for? I think the U.S. flag would be appropriate!

God Bless America!

War will always be inevitable unfortunately. You can't control human nature.

That is a yellow ribbon, which usually is tied around trees in the front yard of families with people who are in the services. It is conventionally displayed until they return home.

There used to be a song about it, rather old.

Godspeed to our troops. May they come home quickly and safely.

Actually, the symbolism was about a criminal that was getting out of prison, and telling his love to tie a ribbon around a tree if she still wanted him. I think it was a Tony Orlando song.

I never have really understood how it was appropriate in relation to the song to use it for either hostages or soldiers.

That was the whole Carter wringing his hands instead of showing strength thing to me. I never liked the idea of the helplessness it looked to show.

OK,

Here is a synopsis of how the ribbon became a symbol of loyalty in America.

I don't declare this site as a de-facto standard of history, but it makes sense to me.

Yellow Ribbon

No one wants anyone to get hurt or die. No one wanted to see our troops get mowed down landing in France on D-Day either, but aren't you glad that someone had the courage and payed the price to stop Hitler? I thank God that we had the guts to stand up and say that this evil stops here.

It would be nice if we could all stay home and no one would ever harm the U.S. and we could all feel warm and fuzzy inside, but some people of this world just don't like us. I'm thankful that our veterans and military leaders bought the peace that we now enjoy. You say you don't believe in the war. Fine. That's your right. You will be protected by those that have the courage to pay whatever price it costs elsewhere to ensure peace here.

British poet A.E. Housman wrote this about soldiers of the British Empire, many of them volunteers:

Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose;
But young men think it is, and we were young.

Hopefully our brave soldiers, seamen, airmen, and marines can get rid of this evil and bring peace to us all. I'm proud of them. We all should be.

God bless the U.S.A.

Amen brother Wayne. I sure am glad we don't have to have everyone "believing in the war" to get the job that has to be finally done. I'll leave it up to my president and his hundreds of expert advisors with inside knowledge and resources as to whether or not it is necessary. I think my opinion one way or the other is about as worthless as every other uninolved American.
