When does everybody shift?
Aargh!!! The OP is talking about when to shift to remain in "lift" mode!
The Z has a decent gear ratio, and your 1-2 shift (talking about non-rev-up 6800 rpm limiter) should be done at or 100 rpm above redline, to keep the meaner cam profile (what you call "lift") turned on. On the 2-3 shift, you will have to touch the rev-limiter because 3 is significantly taller than 2. 3-4 is a very easy change because they are very close, and this is where the Z shines (and pulls the S2000 very easily); shift close to redline, not at or past. If you have to go from 4-5, this is almost like 3-4. And if you have to go from 5-6, then man, u r 1 crazy S.O.B. or you're on the Nur./Autobahn.
Remember, peak power on a Z (non-rev up) is 200 rpm before redline.

Show me one engine that STOPS MAKING POWER BEFORE or even AT redline.

Maybe you were confused. Maybe your mastery of the english language is not all that. Maybe you meant to say power output peaks before redline(which would be true, but contrary to popular moronic belief, that has absolutely nothing to do with shift points)
You can retract your statements or kindly insert your foot into your mouth.
I will repeat - for maximum acceleration the Z is shifted AT redline in EVERY gear. There is no going OVER redline unless you miss a shift or you have mods, and either case is not relevant to this discussion. Short shifting because peak power is made a few hundred RPM before redline is one of the most ABSURD things I've ever heard on these forums.

Unlike the 350z's linear power band, the celica's is quite narrow and all the power is made after lift. This is why everybody shifts at 8200. HP tapers a bit, but on the 1-2 shift, you can easily stay in lift.
I have little to no knowlege of the mechanical understanding behind when to shift, but in my experience, driving my Z for a little over a year, I feel no hesitation in power when I go right up to the redline.
I have felt a quick lag in power when I shift a little before, perhaps that's a reflection of driving skill, but for me, the strongest, smoothest acceleration comes at redline, even from 4th to 5th.

If it produces peak power before redline, when you shift you drop considerable amount below peak power, if you shift at redline your engine wont lose as much power in the next gear, so shift past peak HP.
I agree, but think this out. How quick does the mind react when the shift light comes on to send your muscles the signal to shift? How quick does the tac climb from 6300 to 6600? How long does it take to make the shift? If you wait to long you take the chance of over-reving and causing the fuel cutoff to engage. If you shift between 6200-6600 you are always within the peak power band. Thoughts?
ok. correct me if im wrong, but "lift" on a celica gts is the sme thing as v-tech...or even mi-vec on mitsubishis.....right? the z does not have variable cams. so as someone said...."he wants to stay in wht he calls 'lift' " ....... that doesnt even apply to a z. he's just wondering when to shift to have the fastest acceleration possible.
