When does everybody shift?
Before I picked up my Z, I had a 2000 Celica GTS 6spd. In order to get it moving, I had to rev the heck outta it. It made all its power at about 7600 rpm and to stay in "lift" during the 1-2 shift, I would shift at 8200 (fuel cutoff). The 2zz-ge was made to rev and this is how everybody on the newcelica.org forums would shift. As far as I know, this does not have a severe affect on reliability. So my question is, when is the best time to shift when racing?

Racing... you mean drag/roll racing? In that case maximum acceleration is had by shifting at redline. Some cars are geared poorly and might require a short shift for max accel, but the Z is not one of those cars.
You can get your specs on the Z's drivetrain with your dyno chart in hand and bust out your calculator and come to the same exact conclusion: torque output is always higher in a lower gear at redline than it is in the next gear at the lower RPM, or you can just take my word for it.

I shift by the seat of my pants---As u get used to the car u should too. Use ur ears, and if ur hittin it hard, the tach. If u need to, have it dynoed and see where peak HP is. Red line is not neccessarily Peak HP
Actually most factory engines stop making power several hundred RPM's before redline and actually tend to fall off a bit before, so your pretty much wasting time going that far, if your redline is 8200 shift around 8000.

Well, the celica's 2zz-GE has vvtl-i, or what we call "lift." Lift kicks in at 6800 rpm. If you were to shift at 8k, on the 1-2, you won't land in lift, so the car will lag a bit, then once you hit 6800, you'll feel that surge of power again. Unlike the 350z's linear power band, the celica's is quite narrow and all the power is made after lift. This is why everybody shifts at 8200. HP tapers a bit, but on the 1-2 shift, you can easily stay in lift.
