Default Somewhat annoyed with rev limiter

I have been trying some launches and some 0-110 runs in preperation for the drag strip opening day on April 2nd since the weather has gotten a bit better. I have been quite annoyed with my rev limiter, it seems to kick in just before the redline. Also the somewhat notchy shifter sometimes has a hard time getting into 3rd when pow shifting 2nd-3rd gear and I end up missing the shift (happens not too often). I am so programmed to shift at redline from my last car, a 345 FWHP 1992 Eclipse - The rev limited didn't kick in till 100 rpms after the redline so I had a bit of leeway and the shifting was a bit less notchy.

So what I am wondering is say 6400-6500 Rpms for a shift point as good as redline? I am not worried about the 3rd gear thing I'll get used to that.. Anybody else feel the rev limited jumps in a bit soon? I just have the feeling I am gonna throw a gear and embarrass myself

The rev limiter is VERY aggressive and steps in immediately. I also am not used to this and am learning to adjust my shifts. It is fairly annoying that you can't even HIT the redline...

If the rev limiter is kicking in too soon, you can increase the number to a point above redline.

how so?
We are talking about the actual rev limiter, not the shift light.

I'm sure he's talking about the shift light.. I don't think I woud want to control the rev limiter, i might get greedy But seriously I would like to at least hit the redline, It's instinctive to shift there and its a hard habit to break. My friend's 2001 Celica's redline is 7800 and it happily revs to 8300-8400 Before the rev limiter kicks in, he gets 500RPMs more VTEC and gets better times. I am just asking to hit the redline, I would never go over it. I wish the redline was say 6650, that would be perfect.

You're right: I was thinking of the rev limiter as the light, itself.

shifting a tad under redline will net just as good as or better times than redline itself. I think the revlimiter does kick in at 6600, but the needle often is a tick behind. no way to prove this theory, but I believe its possible.

as for the celica, in some cars, redline does not equal fuel cutoff. in ours it does. I dont know why they do this, but they do... seems to me that redline is redline, why is it redline if your ok to go past it? will they void your warrenty if you go past it? owell

good luck at the track.

I have a 5AT and I made a big mistake. I was in manual mode when I downshifted to 2nd gear and the rpm hit like 7000rpm! I hope there is no damage. What rev limiter??

wow, it shouldnt have let you do that... I hear that the Z auto gives you much more control than most others, but none the less, if there isnt enough RPMs to do the downshift, its sposed to ignore you to make it impossible to damage the car....

perhaps you read it wrong? if you did do damage, youd be able to tell. the Z can almost assuradly handle even 7000RPMs without too much worrying, 8000 is would be a different story.

I agree. Shift before redline on purpose. Check the max torque and HP curves. If you're going to redline, those curve are dropping way off anyway. Keep the rpms at the top of the curves. More rpms is not necessarily better.

hopefully if Nismo, or JW or someone else comes out with a LEGIT ECU, it will raise it a few hundred RPMs (along with an extra 10-15 HP ). Is it EVERY going to happen??

Man, I bi**h about this daily to myself and to my buddy (was talking about it just a few hours ago). If they planned on making it cut in at or just before redline, they should have just lowered redline. I, just like everyone else like us, is so used to shifting right at redline, or a tad after. I know it has a super early rev limiter but I still manage to hit it because it's such a hard habit to break. At least it's not as bad as hitting a rev limiter on a bike at like 14k+ RPMs, it sounds terrible! At least the Z doesn't throw a fit like sportbikes do!

Exactly, thats why I made this post... Its so hard to shift under the redline since I am programmed to shift at it. When your racing your mind is on lots of things and thats what makes it hard to think "shift before redline, shift before redline, shift before redline"

I'm also annoyed at the rev limiter. I've hit it twice in the short time I've owned my Z, but never hit it the rev limiter when I owned my 99 GS-t for 4 years. It was great to be able to shift at 7500rpm with a 7000rpm redline.

Can't wait to raise the rev limit someday.

Ditto to that last post. My 96 GSX reved 500past redline too. Its all about reprogramming your mind.

I am about to bust out a red crayon and fix the F#&@ thing!

My Yamaha R6 has a very soft rev-limiter @ 15,800rpms....much softer than my Z's...

Technosquare can reprogram your ECU so the fuel cutoff will occur @ 7100 RPM instead of 6600.

You guys might want to check into that.

Also, I've looked @ the torque, HP, and gearing of the Z, and for the 1/4 you'll want to shift as close to redline as possible without hitting the fuel cutoff.

I know this will obviously be a stupid question to most......but, am I to understand that my fuel will cut off at 6,600 rpm's????
I have my rev light set to 6,600 and shift when it lights. What happens when the feul is cut off?
