Default TPMS - how difficult is it to transfer

TPMS (tire pressure monitor sensor) - how difficult is it to transfer it from stock wheels to aftermarket wheels?

Hi tschangrx7,

I looked into this about 4 months ago when I had aftermarket wheels put on my car. Here is what I was told by some guys who are pretty squared away.

They changed the tpms sensor in 2006 (me), it is actually part of the valve stem. If the stem size matches up they can throw them on your new rim, if the stem size is not the same as stock (me) there are wheel/tire guys comfortable with drilling into the back of your new rim and mounting the tpms sensor again...I chose not to go this route and live with the tpms light on for now.

I think every year before 2006, the sensor is strapped around/inside your wheel...so they can just restrap when you get the new rims mounted with tires.

Good luck!

Frankie

Oh yea...I never asked if you could mix pre 2006 tpms sensors with a 2006 car, it might be a good question to ask and I wished I had thought about it when my new wheels were being put on :~(

The TPMS have always been the same...

It is part of the Valve stem assembly...

Below are images...

They do not mount into multi piece wheels or some reverse mount wheels...

In some cases they need to be reprogrammed so you would have to bring them to a local dealer and have them re-program them for you...

Strapping them inside the wheel is not recommended but people do do it... they are usually hard to program if strapped inside the wheel if the sensor is mounted far from the tire side wall... the sensors do not get picked up by the machine to program them through most wheels...

This image shows a sensor mounted in a normal wheel like OE...

this image shows how it would be in a multi piece wheel...

I had that story all screwed up...sorry guys.

Is it ok to drill into the back of the rim...I guess they kind of make a dummy valve that you would never really use guys?

I object to doing anything that my affect the structual integrity of the wheel (like widening etc...)

So I wouldnt drill...

There is a thread showing how to do tie straps... I dont recommend it... but it can be done...

Now the TPMS Sensors have gone way down in price... When the system first came out, they were about $135 each!

Hi Jason

So if you don't drill or don't strap, you are kind of stuck with that annoying little light on? Is there a easy way to turn it off?

I called a Nissan dealer on the island here and they said that they would not do whatever needs to be done to make the light stay off. I think the guy said something about safety blah..blah but I have never needed this to stay on top of my tire pressure with any other car.

I don't get what the big deal is if there is actually a way for them to program the sensor off or something.

Thank you

Frankie

The light only comes on after 30-45 mins of driving if the tire pressure sensors are not presant (if they are in the car then it may set off the light sooner)...

once you turn off the car the light re-sets...

I ran my car with no tire pressure sensors for the longest time... it would turn on rarely since I didnt make that many long trips... sometimes it doesnt come on at all...

Where are your TPMS being stored? If its next to your car in the garage, move them away...

If they are stored near your car, then your car is sensing they are there and is expecting a signal... after a few minutes it figures you have a flat...

if the sensors are no where near your car at startup, then it wont expect any signal from them and turn on after 30-45 mins or not at all...
