To all the adults in the forum:

I respect the fact that you bought the car by busting your asses off. But lets say if you went back a couple of centuries to when you were 16 (jk) and you were offered a Z would you refuse? Yes i know i was not offered but still. I dont really know how to justify this but not all teens are bad and as people have said before anyone can be a good or bad driver.

anyone can be a good or bad driver.
Some people have more talent than others, some are more careful than others, and talent and care can make up for lack of experience to a certain extent.

Still, the only thing that will make you a truly good driver is experience, probably best measured by hours behind the wheel. A car like the Z reduces your margin of safety a good deal by giving you the capability to do things you couldn't otherwise, and more experienced drivers have something to fall back on that you won't.

Note that I think experience is a much bigger issue than maturity -- I got my license when I was 20, because I'd gone to a small college at 16 and had never needed a car. Trust me, my first year of driving was harrowing for me and my passengers, despite that I was a whole lot more mature than I had been at 16.

The problems tended to be things like: I hadn't developed the instincts to make common decisions, like when was safe to turn, automatically, so I'd sit there and THINK about them, or I'd panic and make a stupid decision. I'd do stuff like sit in someone's blind spot, which only having other people sit in mine trained me out of. Or, I'd screw up because I needed to do something like turn on the windshield wipers and the control placement was not an ingrained instinct. (this last can be an issue on ANY new car btw.)

Remember, nobody EVER INTENDS to crash their car, they do it despite their best efforts. So, be careful, don't do anything stupid, and maybe your car will survive your first few years of driving!

And no, I probably wouldn't have refused the car, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't have.

Anyway, I suspect your dad just wants to drive it himself!!

("You take the station wagon today, kid!")

here's my take... 16 yr old. should not be "given" a high performance sports car.

BUT.....

Consider this. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) regulations say a 17 yr old. can fly a plane. Any plane. Even a high performance turbo prop that goes in excess of 350 mph and carries 12 people..... IF they receive the proper training. Pilot training is extensive... but in the end most pilots are well trained and know how to handle it.

It'd be nice if there were a horsepower limit to anyone under 18yrs old. Anything over a pre-determined limit would require the driver to receive training and pass a written, oral and practical test....

Also... once that was done and the driver was certified, any abuse or wreckless behavior resulting in an incident or accident would receive harsh penalties (just like a pilot).

Of course this will never happen, but in a perfect world I'd bet it would minimize teen accidents due to wreckless driving behind the wheel of a high performance vehicle.

...... my 50 cents worth......

Mark, no harm - no foul. I was not offended by your post, but just took a moment to expand on it. Take care.

Children should not drive cars PERIOD. In georgia the general assembly is working and a law that will make each teenage child sign a contract that they will be tried as an adult in any criminal case regarding operating a motor vehicle.

I really don't care if there are a handful of kids out there that know how to pilot a automobile. Because for every one kid that has common sense there are about 50 without any of it.

Yesterday 2 more 16 year old kids died on the way to school here in georgia. It is just sad.

Either that or it should be really hard to get a license. REALLY HARD. Teenagers should not be allowed to drive with any non-related passengers until they are 18.

350zLord, I've got your back here. But, I have come to realize that these discussions on this forum about 16 year olds with Zs never are anything short of a beating of young drivers for whatever reasons. I used to take up the cause of my fellow 16 year old z drivers but I stopped because I realized that it wasn't worth arguing or even discussing. Be happy your getting the Z and don't do anything stupid. You will be perfectly safe in the car as long as you don't do anything stupid. Oh yeah, and unless your friends already drive porsches you better be ready for catching a lot of flak from kids at your school. I know I did. Anywase, its not worth really arguing about, this thread has repeated itself since almost a year ago when the boards first opened.

Steve & others:

If all the adults are so against it, there must be some reason, right? It's not as though I'm jealous of a 16-year-old owning a 350Z, as I have one myself.

The fact is, everyone who's taking the "wait until later" side is doing so because they have solid reasons for it, in some cases learned through very painful experiences.

I just don't think anyone, not just teenagers appreciate a car that was given to them by mommy or daddy as much as one that they had to work for. If you had to work hard to get your Z you would be more responsible. Why don't you go out and get a job and earn the money to buy a car yourself?

To all the adults, i know you mean well, but what your saying to 350zlord has been said COUNTLESS times on this board. I'm sure he's well aware of your opinions and I'm sure they're duely noted. However, i still believe whenever a 16 yr old makes a posts that mentions he's getting a Z, that nobody should go off topic and tell them what they think about it. It is off topic and really only makes the post die. Maybe PM would be a more appropriate method of communication for whenever the thread is not entitled "should teens drive the Z".

TJZ:

Nonsense. He asked us to provide reasons that he should get the car, and he needs to be told that there's no good reason.

(Now if he were posting that he had the car already, or if he were asking for something other than all the reasons he should have the car, I agree that getting on him about his age would be out of line.)

The third sentence in my last post wasnt referring to this thread in paticular. There have been other threads that were turned into this one that were started for a completely different reason.

I don't care if its a 1982 honda civic it is just as deadly with a 16 year old behind the wheel as a 350z. These kids pull up next to me in these cars their parents bought them and try to race me in the middle of the afternoon on a crowded street.

Teenagers are bad!
