Ok, I guess on the way to work tomorrow I'll drive my normal speed...around 90 or so (there's no traffic and it's just a bunch of long straights...I don't drive wreckless) and use the MPG computer to see exactly what i got. Then on the way home I'll drive 70-75mph (I'll probably go 75 because the speed limit is 75) and see exactly what I get.

You can still get decent gas mileage at 90mph. As long as you do a steady 85-90 you should still be able to get well over 20mpg. I get around 16-17 on the local roads, but combine that with a 30-40 min highway drive, it will bump up the average to ~22mpg.

I'm thinking about buying a 2nd car for the commute. Something like a used civic or corolla. I had no idea the 350Z's gas mileage was so bad. I had never taken it on the highway before. Is this normal?
The worst gas mileage I ever got was 18.5 in town only and driving like I was the stunt double from the dukes of hazzard. Normal driving say mixed and average speed 38 mph I get 24 mpg. The gas mileage you are talking about would be something you would get in a Ford GT or something.

I use to get about 26-28 at 70mphs on my 04. If you dont floor it too much or downshift you should be fine. But at 80-90mphs yes your gonna get low gas miles. Its not the Z's fault, its yours!

lol, the car is tuned for power, not economy. As hard as I drive it, and as "poor" as my mileage is, it still beats my wife's explorer mileage.

The only time I got good gas mileage was in my "break in" period.
After that my heavy foot took over.

I drive about 25 miles one way to work on the hwy I run about 80mph and show about 31 to 32 mpg. In the city I avg about 20mpg. I play around alot on my car. I got about 18k miles on my first set of tires. I was driving a 05 Armada and avg about 13 mpg. Sometime I pull a dee dee dee and forget to shift to sixth and it makes a huge difference.
You may need a good tune up on the Z.

I've never seen more than 25 MPG in my car, even with the cruise control on, 6th gear at 70 MPH. Granted I dont think i'm getting too much below 20 in my city driving either, and i tend to have a pretty heavy right foot. I havn't reset my trip computer for a few weeks and i think my average MPG is just over 20 and my average speed is about 38.

Ok, I used the trip meter today and here's the results.

On the way to work I averaged 76mph and got 21.3mpg.

On the way home I averaged 77mph and it showed I got 26.5mpg

Like I said before - I live in Tucson and my new job is in Sierra Vista which is at an altitude ~5,000ft (Tucson is ~2,400)ft. So I guess that's probably why my mpg sucks so bad in the morning but improves on the way home.

I think I'm just going to have to move to Sierra Vista even though I hate it...but no way am I going to keep burning $17 of gas a day, put thousands of miles on my Z, wear my tires out, etc.

That's sure a whole lot better than:

"I recently got a new job and it's 75 miles away from my apartment. I burned a half-tank today just going to work and getting back home!"

(1/2 tank (10 gallons) for 150 miles = 15 mpg.)

I use to own civics/teggies/accords. Its definitely not the same. I'm seriously considering buying a 2nd beater for commute.

Did you use the MPG meter correctly, though? Sounds trivial I know, but unless you reset it at fill-up and then left on your commute right away, don't expect an accurate number. It is a computer, and computers are prone to data inaccuracies at the hands of misguided users.

We recently discovered in another thread that some of our members were astounded that the MPG meter has to be reset at fill-up to get spot-on measurements.

And you manually reset it from time time? Like at each fill-up?
