say you are driving and you come to a red light. Do you downshift till you get to the light or do you stay in the same gear (for example 4th) and then you shift to 1st when you are stopped at the light. Im not scared of up shifting but downshifting scares me for some reason.

I actually had a dream about a z the other day. I really gotta stop thinkinb about it. haha.

However, I still don't understand shifting down. My boyfriend (now ex) drives a Crossfire, and he was explaining to me one day that when you shift down, you go faster.
Someone please explain this to me, because I don't understand. Anytime I try to shift down my engine revs up to 5500 or so and I think I have just raped my car.

Sorry if I sound completely dumb, hah =)
i'm sorry but i think there is nothing sexier than a cute girl that can drive a manual transmission like a champ! total hotness!!!!!!

When you rev match from 6th do you have to put it to neutral or leave it at 6th and rev match and downshift?!

when you downshift go into desired gear then hold the clutch in to let it rev match and once it hits ease off clutch

So lets say Im on 6th and I want to bring it down to 5th... from 6th to 5th while holding the clutch and rev match?

yes but do not hold the clutch down 100% bc your rpm's will fall i'd say shift in and hold at about 50% to let it match!

anything is difficult at first! how do you get better at anything? Practice. i once did not know how to drive a stick and so did everybody else on this site but with experience it becomes second nature!

is this what you are talking about? ^_-

and yes... ur rev should go up when u down shift.... if u go 2.5k in 6th, then down to 5th... it should be around 3.5k.... it will be jerky if u drop the clutch when u downshift... so rev-match... and it will be smooth ^^

and no, ur not raping ur car at 5k rpm... that's nothing....

That's about the worst downshifting explanation I have heard. Not that I can do any better!!!

It's harder to put into words than to actually do it!

There is no need to row down through the gears every time you come to a stop light. If you are good at rev-matching you can certainly do it if you wish, but there is no need or benefit and mostly just wasted effort and gas. You can accomplish more from a single down shift.

Let's set up an example. You're just cruising along at 45mph in 6th gear and you start to approach a red light. Clutch in > select neutral > clutch out.... clutch back in > select third > blip the throttle > clutch out. Compression brake (aka engine brake.... simply don't apply any throttle) and apply the brakes as needed. As you slow down and your RPM start to approach idle (and definitely before you start lugging the engine)... clutch in > select neutral > clutch out.... and complete the stop. That all may sound complicated but it's really very simple. You can do many variations of this too, as this is just an example. You should never need to select first if you're coming to a stop or still moving more than say 5mph...... unless the light turns green and you really feel the need to tear some ***.

As you sit at the light, remain in neutral with the clutch released. Don't hold the clutch in for long periods of time. When the green light flashes and the flags go up......... push the clutch in.... wait a second or two for the inner workings of your transmission to stop spinning(sometimes you will actually hear it stop spinning), then select first..... and you're off.

So lets say Im on 6th and I want to bring it down to 5th... from 6th to 5th while holding the clutch and rev match?
6th to 5th at a sane speed is not a very big difference in RPM... the blip for the revmatch only needs to be a small one.... your RPM in 5th will only be slightly higher than they were in 6th.

It's harder to put into words than to actually do it!
Ain't that the truth..... explaining it is 10x more difficult for me than actually doing it.... btw... when you rev-match the clutch should be fully depressed. If you aren't pushing the clutch down all the way(or at least most of the way) you aren't doing something right.
