Question The "G" Meter...

I don't know how many of you remember but there was rumblings when the 2000 concept was released about the "G" meter which was suppose to measure the car's lateral g's. For some reason it didn't make it to the final production model... it was suppose to be integrated into the trip computer - wonder why it didn't make it? I thought that was going to be one of the coolest gadgets!

They had a G meter in the R34 Skyline GT-R...more of a toy than anything else. I remember watching the Tiff Needel test drive...he was trying to make it swing as much as possible on an airport runway...pretty funny. I'd rather have the shift light and stop watch that we got any day though.

My 84 Turbo had a G-meter but it was only for acceleration and deceleration - not lateral (i.e., side-to-side). I think if they put that on a production car, they probably would be opening up for lawsuits because people would "check it out" and end up crashing or something. Just my opinion.

Don't know much about the VDC but would think lateral g measurement could play a part in that role...thinking of the possibility of an inexpensive accelerometer.

Who needs a G-meter when the G-force fish do the same thing but are much more fun!

They'll not only tell you side-force, but can do tricks also! All they require is a minimum of food and a 12V air supply source.

I just bought this :
http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/gtech.htm

Apexi also makes one called a RSM - rev speed meter, but the install is harder. The Gtech one just needs the cig lighter!

I got this one:

http://www.gtechpro.com/

It does a little less but is only $140

Works great.

Measures HP, 1/4 Mile, 0-60, 60-0 Breaking, Lateral G's

I remember that 3rdpower!

They allready have the on board computer harware & display. How much could it have cost to add a couple of accelerometers? Maybe there would ahve been patent infringements with G-Tech and the like that made it cost prohibative.
