Pre-Order Program
Seeing as we (and Nissan for that matter) still can't be certain when the preorders will all get here it's hard to nail down when they will be generally available. The best info would lead me to guess no earlier than late December, and more likely January or February. Expect most dealers to mark them up over MSRP, but I would think you could find someone to sell it for sticker if you look around.

Unfortunately, I missed the pre order period as well, but I did go to the dealer and put down a deposit on one for when the regular shipments arive. At least that way, I will have first crack at them ahead of some guy walking in off the street. My dealer said I'd be lucky to get one in by Nov or Dec, which from what I have been reading, it may even be later, but I hope not much.
You mentioned a second pre-order period. I do not think they are going to do that. I think what happens is you go in, tell them what your looking for, put down a deposit (mine wass refundable), and then they will pass it on to their regional rep, who in turn tries to steer the setup you want to that dealer. It is just a question of if your setup is available and when.
As for the markup - My dealer flat out told me they would mark up the car if other dealers here started doing it first. I don't care how much I want a certain car, I'm not going to pay over MSRP and told him this. On the buy order I signed, I had hiw state that they would NOT mark up the car over MSRP. You might want to look for a dealer who would do the same.

My feeling is that Nissan will not have another pre-order process with the Z. The only other opportunity they will have to do it would be with the intro of the Roadster. I think they've shot their wad with the hardtop pre-order program and won't want to go through the hassle of doing it all over again. Good luck in getting your Zs, gentlemen...
I'd say you're looking at January '03 or so...
