Yeah, it doesn't say anything in the owner's manual about staying under 60. If anything highway miles should be the easiest on the engine.

Just use common sense and take it easy, but make sure to vary the rpm and speed.

Default Bull$h!t..

When I first bought my 06 Z, it was eating 2 quarts after the first 1500 miles.. I smak the redline atleast 3-4 times during the week and now at 6200 miles, it has slowed to 1/2 quart every 2500.. I figure if I keep this up, it'll eventually be good...

The engines are broken in for the most part at the factory, the only thing that you need to stay off id the trans and engine need to synch and there are pretty good too. People who think when they buy a car it really only has 12 miles on the engine are very wrong.

Under 60 is not the issue; manual says to stay under 4000 RPMs for first 1200miles.

well its not 1920, breakins arnt really required, I have always broken in a car the way i drive it. that under 60 and low RPMs is BS.

did you take it easy when you test drove the car? bet the answer is no, you wanted to see what it would do....kinda defeats the purpose of a break in doesnt it?

I didn't go over 4K on my test drive and It only had 11 miles or so when I got it it so I don't think it was test driven much. I look at it like this. Will breakin hurt anything? No. Why be impatient?

My experience with my '06 has been similar, but who's to say that if I hadn't followed the manual, consumption may not have dropped? I didn't baby it for 1200 miles, I drove it like I use it which means I often push 4K when I'm shifting and speed has nothing to do with it. After 1200 miles I got to discover the thrill of red-lining for "peak" performance which I also only do about 3 times/week. I now have 18K on it and it runs like a top.

Every dealership I've been to the sales guys always tell me that they beat on the Z's as soon as they get them. So If your car already had 11 miles that was a very hard 11 miles. I test drove a car with 3 miles on it and the salesman was redlining it and encouraged me to do the same.

Breaking in is important. Think of it kinda like stretching and warming up before you go running for 10 miles (haha). You want all your metal parts and joints to run smoothly. On a brand new car, believe it or not, you're actually gonna grind and shave moving parts down just a hair so that they glide really nice. It's also probably a good idea to change your oil more frequently in the beginning to get rid of all the shaved metal. With patience, you sorta "train" your car to fit your driving style and slowly push it to its full potential. Good luck.
