Default Extra insurance for the "goodies"

I called my insurance company this morning inquiring about getting an extra 4K worth of coverage for my new GTS's and tires I just received... get this, they want $1300 more every six months..

I asked them if they were sure this wasn't a typo or glitch, and they confirmed that it was not...

anyone else here have this extra coverage, and if so, is yours this much?

The extras in my car are covered under my $40k coverage of "renters insurance". It adds an extra $3 a month to my premium.. USAA baby!

How does that work for items on your car? I thought renter's insurance only covered certain items when you're renting a house or apartment... I didn't think it extended to your car. Unless you have a floater that specifies this type of coverage.

man.. AIG is smokin crack.. I just got off the phone with USAA and they offered me coverage at a third of what I am paying now with an even better policy.. and they don't have that "extra coverage" like talkin about.. if I have receipts, they pay if stolen..

that just made my day!

When I got my Volks I called my agent to ask if I needed anything additional. They told me no, as long as I had receipts for anything I bought and added to the car it wouldn't be a problem. I told them what and how much and they didn't blink an eye. No additional charges at all. BTW - it was State Farm.

That's ridiculous.
What's your ensurance company? Mine's Mercury and they charge
10% of it's value to insure aftermarket parts.
I never took that coverage though. When I got into an accident
they replaced my aftermarket rims for free anyway.

Renters and homeowners insurance covers stuff like a phone, camera, iPod, computer that is carried in your vehicle. IOW, things that are not part of the car itself. Installed stuff like a stereo or wheels are covered by your auto insurance.

+1 To what Dave is saying here. It's in the language and you need to read your policy guide. Often times, your agent or his staff is less familiar that you are with the specifics. Call your claims office and speak to an adjuster and ask a hypothetical.

As far as the statement by another poster that insurance is a scam! Once you need it, I guess you don't see it that way anymore.

To re-affirm Dave's statement. Homeowners or Renters will cover possessions in the car, NOT installed on the car.

I was with AIG, but as of midnight tonight, I will be with USAA. AIG was charging me $1980 every 6 months. This is for full coverage with a $500 deductible and loan/lease payoff. I am 31 and have one speeding ticket here in New Orleans (I think Louisiana is in the top 5 highest for car insurance nationwide). I was expecting this amount when I bought my car... ok, maybe not that much.. but it wasn't that big of a surprise... I also got quotes from Geico, Progressive, and State Farm before going with AIG because they were the cheapest...

with USAA, they are giving me the exact same coverage.. for $633 every six months.. and they even give me the option of having home owners insurance, a new policy at that, which is a BIG deal here on the gulf coast since Katrina.. ask any home owner who is looking for a new policy and they will tell you..

so yeah.. I was def surprised when she quoted me the price... I immediately called AIG and told them I wanted to cancel after today.. they asked why, i told them I was given a better offer, they then told me they could work with me.. I told them the details.. they said nothing.

And like someone said above.. with USAA, no matter what you put on your car, you save the receipt, they reimburse you in the event its stolen/damaged. And here in New Orleans, my new Volks are def gonna attract some unwanted attn.

And like Theatrix said... once you need it, you def appreciate it more.. I've had 2 vehicles stolen from me in the past, one a Maxima, the other a Yammy R6.. both of these were not even 6 months old..

I tried to get additional coverage from Erie, my agent told me it's not available and they will cover anything thats installed in the stock location. Kinda sucks since most things (amps and subs) could be easily removed via smash and grab from the rear, but at least the Nav unit in the dash would be covered..
