Default For those of you who live up in the snowy regions...

...when you are purchasing a vehicle, how much do you worry about undercarriage rusting in the newer cars (year 2001+)...I'm looking at a car in Minnesota, and really want to get it...but it will be a blind purchase, meaning I will be buying the car without even looking at it or test driving it first...I'll be calling the used car sales manager and get a price for him and then pay for it and have it shipped to me...so, do you guys have problems keeping salt off of your car in the winter? Is rust and corrossion a problem most of you have to worry about when protecting your vehicle in the winter months? What about when you are purchasing a used car, do you look for that? Is that a concern when you are purchasing a car?

You're not going to get a lot of Z owners worrying about rust.

What kind of car are you purchasing?

I'm looking to purchase a ZR...why do you say not a lot of Z owners worrying about rust??? is it because they don't drive it everyday? well, lets say if they do use it as their DD?

A 350Z will have few snow miles. Rust is a minor concern.

not worry at all. If it not exotic, it's not worth worrying.

well...I'm not really worrying about as far as is the car's been wrecked or repainted, I'll verify that before I make the purchase and i'll get a carfax on it...but the main thing I'm worrying about is snow condition and salt...and I'm trying to find out what else you guys worry about up there when you purchase a pre-owned vehicle other that what i have said...

The Zs are prob pretty good about rust prevention, due to the fact that 90% of the sub structure is Aluminum, and also ----How bad can it be on a car that is 4 years old at most ???

Do some heavy pressure washing when u get it and keep it washed

Because at most people have had their 350's for 4 years. Rust forming on a car that old is very unlikely. I'd say the magic number is around 8 years, where rust may start to be an issue. Rust is the least of your worries.

so..other than the typical worries of purchasing a pre-owned vehicle in all the other regions of the country, is there anything else I have to worry that is specifically pertaining to the snowy regions?

Be very careful if it is a Z, they are not very good against rust. My 94 SVX has less rust on the bottom than my Z

Most people that drive a Z in my area have a beater car anyway (including myself). There area threads about storing the Z in the garage for the whole winter. So my guess is if you find a Z that has lower mileage but a little older, the chance is the previous owner had a beater car for the winter.
