Default Thinking about a Z.

My name is Joe and I’m twenty-one years old and living in New Jersey. I’ve driven a 2003 Cavalier for the past four years and finally decided it’s time for something new, nice and reliable. I’m in my fourth year of college while working full-time and decided to treat myself to a present. I’ve been reading up on the Z’s for a couple weeks now and it seems to be the car for me.

I stopped by my local Nissan dealership and test drove the base coupe model and fell in love. The sticker was about $29,095. The saleswoman brought it down to $28,000. My friend, who’s in auto sales, told me a good deal is $250-$300 dollars over invoice. With that said, would $27,300 be a good price including tax and tags? Also, is the base model a good choice to go with? I don’t need high-tech gizmos and gadgets when it comes to vehicles. Thanks for all the help/suggestions in advance.

joe, will you be driving the car in the winter?

if so the base model doesnt come with a limited slip dif or traction control and you will need snow tires with any model you get. And what your friend said about the price sounds about right.

If you don't get the Enthusiast or higher, you will probably regret it unless you are going to mod big time anyway.

Get an 07 Enthu, DO NOT GET A BASE, No traction control, and no LSD = no good. In the rain basic TCS is a life saver, if you gas to much in second gear in the rain the rear looses easily

I don’t know which model suits your needs, but I can tell you what members are driving.

Get the Enthusiast; best bang for buck and you will need LSD & TCS in snow/ice. Also plan on getting snow tires for winter.

If you can, keep the Cavalier as a winter beater. Put liability only on it and a good set of snows. I have a Wrangler now for the winter, so the Z will go away for 3-4 months a year.

I don't think I can afford the Touring, but the enthusiast I can do. Would the traction control and limited slip suffice in the rain?

Yes. Enthusiast is fine for your purposes. Just don't drive a touring. As soon as you do, you won't be able to buy anything else. It will suck you in. Also

Oh BTW:

Go to Edmunds.com and check the invoice price; then try to find factory incentives, etc. There is a guide on how to do it on edmunds. Make sure you're not giving them more than, say, 3-4% profit, if that. Also, might try going back to the dealer and saying, "you know, I've decided I need an enthusiast, but I can't do more than the price you offered before" and see what she says.

Don't forget to take into account the all important running expenses. Petrol/gas, tyres, and everything else, including insurance. They're not the cheapest cars to run, but a lot of fun.
