What happened to the manual transmission?

This is the 350Z inventory at CarMax in Baltimore, MD. 17 new Zs, and only 5 are manual transmissions. Is the manual transmission dead? Is it outdated?
I also found it very hard to find a touring model in my area with a standard transimission(so I went with a base). I assume its because the people who prefer the leather/navi/power seats also prefer automatic...just a guess

Yea, try finding a Manual G35 Coupe..SHEESH

when i bought mine, i wanted a manual, but i couldnt find one at the same price or even close

I saw some recent statistics showing that less than 20% of the driving public knows how to use a manual transmission. I've got an AT but if I were younger and my wife was skilled with a stick shift I think I'd have sprung for an MT. She doesn't drive the car but if she had to I feel more comfortable knowing that she can. Interesting that some sports cars, like the Honda S2000, come only with a manual transmission. Apparently there are enough MT drivers and willing learners to make the car sellable.
Hmmm, that is an interesting fact about the S2000. Obviously Honda did the production cost vs. projected sales profit analysis. I guess that Honda feels the Automatic S2000 would price itself out of it's target market, or would be a waste of money for them. Apparently Nissan doesn't feel that way about the Z

An automatic S2000 would also be crap in the driving excitement. No torque, no shifting of your own gears = lame.
While I can understand your feelings about wanting a to be able to shift yourself. I do not understand why it would bother you that they offer the Z in auto. If you want it in standard bad enough you can always order one or look outside of your area if one is not local to you.
I test drove both the auto and the standard. They didn't seem any different as far as power was concerned. Since my wife is not very good and driving a standard and I would like to not have to replace the clutch every few years I decided to go with Auto. I personally am glad for once a good sports car has the same specs for auto as they do for standard. Now if we can just get them to have the same number of gears.
