Not to worry. The Z won't let that happen ("blow the tranny"). Getting to reverse requires a significant amount of down-pressure on the shifter. Going to reverse gear with forward momentum will result in a great deal of "grind," and the Z won't allow this.
Maybe you should have your parents trade that car for a better learning car than a Z. I started out with an auto Pontiac Sunbird and even though it sucked having such a sucky car, I learned some respect for cars.

You are not worthy. Learn to read the manual, even the quick start guide illustrates the procedure for going in reverse. Kids these days. worried for our future I say!
