I am planning on purchasing a 350z. Heres the dumb question....Is there a big diffrence in manual vs. auto in the 350z? I will be using it as my daily driver AND i have little to no experience in manual transmission cars. I have a few friends willing to teach me before i get the car. What you guys think? Im not into racing but do love speed!

it doesn't take long to learn it...

i bout my manual on friday afternoon....practiced all weekend, and by monday morning i was confident and ready to drive to work in morning rush hour...

by the end of the week it became 2nd nature....

 

Well then lets get started.

 

definitely get some practice before picking up your Z. Nothing worse than killin it at the dealer on the way out. I hadn't driven a manual in 7 years and had no problem hopin in my new Z and driving off. One thing though, I find the Z a little harder to shift smoothly, at least first and second. I have to really pay attention. I don't mind a little jerky-ness but your girlfriend won't if she's like mine.

 

You will definitely have an easier time with the auto initially; but if your enthusiast minded, there is a high likelihood that you will regret the purchase of the auto. It happens a lot on these boards. Take the time to learn manual you won't regret it. Plus you will have acquired a valuable new skill that you will have for the rest of you life.

 

 

I can only tell you what I did. I don't have a lot of experience in a MT (have driven but never owned)

Now mine isn't going to be a DD (least till my beater finally dies) but I went with the MT

In my case though I don't sit in that much traffic usually but I do have some. Not sure how bad it really is out there.

 

Thanks guys for putting up with one of the worlds dumbest questions. I have a friend who will sell me his 99 integra for $1500 so i can practice MT. The reason i asked is because i didnt want any power from my soon to be Z go to waste. Good thing i stay away from 405 when i go to work. My job is about 10mins away and i just take 1 street, i also heard that if i dont drive for at least half hour or so its bad for my car because it doesnt heat up properly, it that true? (another dumb question, but thats what forums are for) Once again, thanks alot guy for your response.

Just need to clarify that question, the last thing i want is to hurt my soon to be Z due to a short distance driving. I know its a dumb question but some people might be interested in the answer.

I know rotaries have been known to have that problem, but I wouldn't worry about it with the Z. Not letting it heat up is probably not as good as going for a nice long drive but the difference is so small its not really worth paying any attention to. Besides I think the engine is totally warmed up after about 10 minutes.

As for getting a manual, I would say I regret the descision roughly 5 percent of the time. Yes, being in traffic sucks but you're buying a pretty hard core sports car. Why compromise on something like transmission choice? If THATS the kind of experience you're looking for why not get a nice acura or lexus? something more luxurious.
