Why????!!!!!!

Maybe the traffic flow of that parking lot can explain this phenomenon. It looks like the cars gravitate to the left side of the lot for some reason.
So, although it is the "farthest" corner of the lot, it might be the most natural part of the lot for people to drive to.

What the hell is with all the morons telling him to key the car?
First of all, the shade is only available in those two slots on that row.
Secondly, if you knew anything, it's that most drivers tend to look for a REFERENCE when parking. What easier reference is there than another car?
Deal with it.

Why do you say it was a "he"? Maybe June is right. Some girl hoping to hit a conversation with you?
Electricchild probably has the answer. Some people don't pay as much attention to the lines as to the distance to another car...in this case still a safe one.
Of course they may be unhappy if you left and some monster 2 door pulled in just a scootch farther from the white line than they are. They would think ahead in the future if they had to get in on their passenger side and crawl across the seat.
You are probably worrying too much. You could get a couple boat bumpers to hang from your car.

LOL. First of all, kudos on being able to back-in your Z with the curb on the passenger side!!! Actually, it's human-nature to be orderly, and fill-in spaces. Note: it's not the same if you were in a shopping mall with 1000 empty spaces and you parked 100yds away from entrance, and someone parks next to you (that's an a-hole).

Maybe he figured you were the least likely to ding his Neon. You know that there are some people who do not have cars as nice as the Z but still like to keep them nice. It IS possible he thought the same way as you and figured you both could team up and avoid getting dinged. If this is the case you are covered on both sides.
On the other hand, he could be a complete douche and I would wait outside after work to say something since a note might cause an "intentional" dent in your door.
Either way he should not be parked that close.
On a side note. Why back in like that. I hate when people do that. If the lot were full, the guy driving the neon has a better chance of getting his door dinged by you if a stiff wind blows the door open. If you were parked normally, no chance. I always think that people that park like that are up to no good because you must be able to leave in a hurry parked like that ;-)

It's interesting that you see this happening with cars in a parking lot, but if you were to take a bus, everyone tends to fill the bus by taking their own seat first. You would never see the second person who gets on the bus sit down right next to the first person on the bus. It would just be awkward.
