Default Pre-Ordered 2003 Z, any significance?

i searched for awhile, couldnt come up with anything. is there anything signficant to this besides being the first 5000 to have one? anything noticeable on the VIN?, etc etc? my father has one with 15,000 miles on it and this has been bugging me. thanks!

You were of the first to notice tire feathering and manual tranny failures? Other than that, probably not. My friend was one of the first in AZ to get a 350Z due to some connections. He sold it with no mention of pre-order.

If you owned production numbers 1 through 10, its an interesting point, but of little significance.

0 or 1 is probably sitting in Nissan's production museum and I doubt 2-10 are even around anymore in the generally masses.

i think some preorder customers got that lust then love book. other than that nothing special

Actually , there were several things we received from Nissan , including a beautiful set of picture prints , a couple of books , two or three packets on the Z including a cd for the computer and more . In the beginning , we preorder people were treated very well by Nissan . I still have all of the original materials and they are definitely collectible if you are into Z's , especially the 350. BTW , my preorder had none of the problems mentioned above . It's been nothing but pure pleasure .

Probably paid more than sticker or had to buy options or waranty extentions at a higher price.

Actually, Nissan NA stepped in to prevent a lot of profiteering on the reintroduction of the Z. Contracts for more than MSRP were often rejected by Nissan and District Service Managers (DSMs). If a dealer persisted in reaming a customer, Nissan told them to stop, or face getting reduced shipments of the highly desirable cars in the coming months.

As we all know, there's always a way to catch an unwary or stupid buyer, but I give Nissan kudos on their handling of the pre-order 350Zs.

very true. i remember how well they treated us. called us everyday to keep us up to date when it was going to come in. i used to love when we would drive in it and people would be like, wtf is that? or when mall security or a cop pulled you over to ask you what it was haha.

anyway, nothing in the VIN that tells you anything?

There is a pic floating around here somewhere of an early-edition redline roadster from late '02 with a $10,000 "market adjustment" charge added to the sticker price on the window. I cringe at the thought of someone ponying up that kind of extra cash for it.

Good to know NNA was actively identifying and stopping such gouging back then. Many manufacturers are willing to look the other way to keep the distribution channel happy.

The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is just that: a 17 digit number with descriptions on where the Z was built (Japan), engine type, model series, body type, etc. etc. The last six digits are obviously the serial #. Anything in particular you were hoping to find?

yea the serial number. if it says 228 is that meaning 228/5000?

When my Z came in, the dealer forgot all about me. When i went to visit the dealer, my car was in the show room marked up 10,000 dollars. Mine came in early aug. 2002. I said can you get all those people out of my car and wash it. They said who are you, this one isn't pre-ordered. It had finger prints all over the dang thing. So i showed them my receipt for down payment and they put a rope around the car and they waited till i paid the rest before they took it out and prepped it. I wasn't thrilled at the dealer, but the first 3 months were great. Everyone in the world would wave, follow, or just come by to talk about Z's they owned. Everyone loved the new Z when it first came out. Every stop attracted crowds, like i had a ferrari or something hehe. I drove it up north and only seen one other Z all day, it was great. A bunch of mini coopers followed me through the hills in central cali, all the way to pismo. That was cool. Anyways, mine is still a pleasure to drive. When nissan n. america was still there in gardena/carson, i got some freebies, they checked out my car and asked question and gave me 100 bucks free credit for parts and stuff, they took pictures of my mods and that was that. I did get the movie, book, but that was it. If you drive by nissan corp. now, some of the buildings are being torn down, the overpass is torn down. Used to love driving by there just to see new cars they would park out front.

The pre-order cars are significant because we have been having fun with these great new Zs longer than the rest of you. Mine is #003604
