Yup... Any car manufactured in Japan that does not provide space for a rear seat faces a significant tax. So... The Z's exported to the USA have that rear compartment(s) while Japanese models allow for a rear seat in the same space to spare the buyer paying a significant penalty. Actually, the rear space in the Z is slightly more generous that the Porsche's "rear seats."
Note: Rear seats are in quotes because they are hardly realistically-sized rears seats.

I lived in Japan for a year, and I never heard of such a penalty.
Also, I was there when the 350Z was first introduced, and guess what? No back seat!
The new 08' Nissan Altima Coupe has properties of what has been mentioned throughout this thread. Hopefully my wife will change her '06 Eclipse for one, of course the 3.5l.

Ed, If you decide to go with the new coupe, please post an evaluation. I'm looking at this car as well (not as a replacement for my Z, but adding another car). This vehicle (the 3.5 liter that you point out as the one to buy) looks like a car on which you could do a lot of customization (suspension, tires, wheels, and engine). Fun stuff.
