All they have to be concerned with is meeting some minimum filtration efficiency. One may be better than the other, but both may be acceptable. Probably due to availability at the time of production.

Well, it's official. I removed the K&N filter and replaced it with the original stock filter (red oiled) and took back the K&N to Advanced Auto Parts for a full, no questions asked, refund. I just could not live with the poor fit any longer. I feel much better about doing this now that I suspect that the stock filter that came with the car is actually a pre-oiled Nismo filter. Hopefully these will remain available from Nissan at a good price.

Now, don't shoot me if I am wrong on this.

I thought car that one "hot wire" mass air flow sensor DO NOT like oil air filter, since any of the oil that fall out with dust may stick to the wire and damage the sensor.

At least from what I know, that has always been the case with this hot wire sensor that Nissan and VW use.

Thats why most of these car use dry type air filter.

So this is why I am wondering why Nissan use oiled filter if they know the car is running a hot wire sensor...unless it is not.

Those who have the red one in their car, please tell us the Nissan part number (should be on the filter somewhere). Thanks

I have the red filter, but it doesn't seem like it is "oiled" to me. My vin is in the 6100 range.

On a related note, my previous car was a VR6 Jetta, in which I had installed a K&N filter. Soonafter, my car developed hesitation, which eventually required the replacement of my MAS.

I am not sure whether the hesitation and the MAS problem was caused by the oily K&N, but I am unwilling to install a K&N filter in my Z.

For reference, the K&N website shows that the Z air filter part number should be "33-2031-2".

danotto, is this the filter that you returned to Advance Auto Parts? If so, it should have fit perfectly......hmmmm

Wayne, the filter fit good enough, but only after attaching the 2 spacers to the bracket. I just could not justify paying for something that was not a direct fit.

WTF? Dude, the filter comes with spacers for a reason. Use'em and everything will be fine. Sounds like a sorta lame excuse to me!

DUDE, do you know me? Sorta lame to talk down to someone you don't know. WTF

If I would have known about the spacers beforehand I never would have bought the filter. I have owned many K&N products and this is the first one that was obviously designed for a different vehicle, but repackaged with spacers so it would fit ours. I am not happy with K&N for cutting corners in this manner.

My stock number is 16546 on the filterand it is red not white and is not preoiled although after you touch there is sort of a residue just I think from being new but it dissolves away quickly. I have the K&N which is not designed for another car, it is just how K&N does a lot of their stuff. Even ls1 motors have a gasket and so do VW's to make them seal tighter. My VIN is something around 11000 or 12000 bought in Feb.

Higher airflow and you never have to purchase another air filter again as the K&N is washable and reusable. The guy who had problems in his Jetta is more because VW sucks rather than the K&N is not good. I have had a K&N in all my vehicles including my 02 GTI and had no problems in any of them (12+).
