I have an S2000 and VIN serial numbers have been posted all over the S2K board forever. At first it was part of your ID on the board by a lot of people. Since thhere were no different models mine was Red/Black #5653.
I am not aware of anyone ever posting a problem with giving out this info.

I did some research, and have that confirmed Jim is a professional Auto Thief!
JUST JOKING JIM!
I'm not sure if there is any harm in posting complete VIN, but I think it's safer to err on the side of caution. I'm sure someone can find an instance where it may have been detrimental to have shared a VIN with the public.
A guess: Someone steals a Z. If they know of a VIN for an identical Z (color, trim, etc), they could change the VIN on the stolen car to match the non-stolen one. This might assist them in selling the stolen car, or at least, hide the fact that is stolen.
Just guessing.
