Default 350z and Gasoline

hey guys, i was just wondering about what could happen to my car if i put regular unleaded in my car. trust me, ive never put unleaded in my car. only 93 octane, i even refuse to use 92 haha.

but at work, as much as this hurts and sounds, we put regular unleaded in our M6's and M5's. they dont have any problems or nothin.

so are there really any problems that can go wrong with ur car?

I am guessing you are not old enough to really understand "regular" and "unleaded". Regular means that it contains lead, which was added as a lubricant. It is no longer sold in the US. Only unleaded is now sold.

I live in Japan, and we only put 100 octane in the Z since that what the Z's engine is designed and setup for here. Obviously, you can get by with less since 100 is not even sold in the US and the engine is setup for a lower octane. Personally, I would put the best gas in. It is not much of a difference in price. If you can afford this car, you can afford the gas.

aright thats not really answering what im asking. but ya we have 100 octane.
and putting race gas in an NA is actually not too good for the car. so no, ur not putting only the best in ur car. and i dont care where ur from.

"Regular" means 87 octane. The term "regular has nothing to do with its lead content.

Lead is toxic, and was a major source of air pollution. Its use in automotive fuel was discontinued in the lte 70's. Gas stations do not sell leaded fuel.

The use leaded fuel would quickly destroy your catalytic converter and O2 sensor. Modern cars cannot use leaded fuel.

Your Z is designed to run on "premuim unleaded" fuel (91 octane, or higher). If you run a lower octane, the ECU will retard timing, and you will see a loss of performance, and an increase in fuel consumption.

Your car came with an Owner's Manual. I suggest you check it out. From the Owner's Manual:

"Use unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 (anti-knock index) number. (Research octane number 96)"

Under no circumstances should a LEADED gasoline be used..."

91 is the US standard (MON+RON/2) octane rating system, and 96 (Research octane) is used in Japan and other countries, Its just a different scale, the actual knock resistance is the same.

Learn something new every day. So the fellow from Japan who stated he runs 100 octane in Japan is really about 93 octane using the US standard. Which is what I use. So we are basically the same based on this. Right?

Wow, this damn question. Asked on every car board across the Web. Answer is always the same. "Why not run recommended fuel?" and "yes, in theory your computer will prevent any damage occurring to your motor due to detonation, or knock.., but it sure would suck if something doesn't work like it should"

no mater, as long as every once in a while you feed those horses some high octane or put injector cleaner..something to clean out the internals...you know run it hot and burn out the gunk

^^ya I wanna Know too

Anyway to the guy in Japan who claims to use 100 octane, they actually do sell 100 octane here in the US. The gas station around the corner here carries it for $7.89 a gallon. lets see so seeing that are tanks are 20 gallons.... that would make for $157.80 . How much is your fill up costing you??

and the answer to the OPs question.. I believe you won't have any problems now.. but in the long run you'll run into some mechanical issues.

why would someone even want to put lower then the best im not rich and its not much of a difference in price seriously. Even in my old pontiac grand prix GTP it never saw lower then 93. Even if i had a 4 banger i would still put 93. Putten crap gas hurts the car over time man. Injectors, fuel filter and who knoes wut else. And the z fuel filter u cant even change its intergrated in the fuel pump i beileve. So thats another reason i never would even think of putten 87

i live in california and i have to go through these crappy watered down 91 oct fuel. Since the z's are 91 oct required vehicles, 91 oct and over is the fuel rating that the dealer recommend. Even in the owners manual, it states that the engine will be messed up if you put lower oct fuel.

I do not believe in this octane requirement myth because..
1. ECU's are designed to prevent knocks from happening
2. With the same oct level, they vary by brands
3. First full tank of gas provided by the dealer is the lowest oct gasoline
