Default Automobile Mag says upcoming Supra will be a Z competitor

On page 20 of Automobile magazine, there is an article which states that the new Supra, whose name may change, is expected to be a direct competitor to the new 350Z. Like the Z, it will be normally aspirated instead of turbocharged. It will be shown at the October Tokyo Auto Show and should go on sale in 2004.

The pic looks cool -- not as cool as the Z, but cool. It has a bit of 240Z in the shape of the side window after the B-pillar.

ya just cant turbo a V6 for this price, wont happen, a turbo I4 is still 30grand, a turbo supra would be 40k again. good luck, they did it once, they all did, if they did it again Id think they were idiots.

I think it looks OK. Not great, but not bad. I think the Z looks way better.

I know toyota will mess it up somehow. I mean, they don't make modern looking cars with cutting edge style. Every car they have out now appeals to 45 and over buyers. (No offense to the over 45 Z owners.) Toyota seems to try to appeal to the masses and not really turn anyone off by their styling, whereas nissan plays more to a styling niche. Either you really like a nissan's styling (Altima) and your gonna buy it, or you really don't care for it much.

Just my opinion.

Anyword on HP or torque?

The article mentioned that the engine would be either a 3.0 or 3.5 liter V6, normally aspirated. It didn't mention any figures for HP or torque.

I agree with you in general about Toyota's designs, except for the Celica. That design appeals to a younger demographic. However, apparently the Celica has not sold well in this body style.

The article said they are trying to recapture the style of the 2000GT, which is why they may change the name from "Supra."

Are you kidding me? The 7th gen Celica is driven around by a ton of would-be college students all over the place, at least here in nyc.

I know, that's what I'm saying. I'm in NY too. Maybe it only sold well here, or even though it seems so many college students are driving it, it still didn't meet their sales expectations.

Haven't you figured out what Toyota's business model has been for the last 15 years or so- wait to see what products do well in the market, then come out with your own version that, at least on paper, improves on the qualities that made the original a success in the first place.

Of course, more often then not, some "personality" is lost in the translation, but most car buyers don't really care about that sort of thing...

I would not be the least bit surprised if the new "supra" trumps the 350z in just about every performance area...just as the old supra improved on he Z32... hopefully, to remain competitive, this time around Nissan will be able to justify improvements to the 350Z ...

The nose of that new Supra seems to have been borrowed from Racer X's car

You're totally right, ethan.

The Supra has always been copying the Z, since the days when it was the Celica Supra. The Z had a straight 6, Toyota gave the Supra a straight 6. The new Z had xxx hp, the new Supra, which came out a year later, matched or slightly beat it.

Now Nissan has gone back to the basics with the Z, and so has Toyota. No real surprise there, but I do remember reading as recently as a year ago, when the Z was just being released, that Toyota was going to come out with a new sports car that might be based on the old 2000GT, and that it was going to be a supercar, 400 hp, etc.

Hmmm, maybe Toyota will come out with 2 new sports cars, a Supra based on Racer X's car, and a 2000GT based on the Mach 5.

The Supra will directly compete against the Z, and as Ethan said, will likely beat it in most performance figures.

I say good, things will only get better for the Z then.
