Had my first smooth-shifting day!
I learned how to drive a stick 2 days before I got my Z , It took me four days and I was ok. The only thing that bothered me was uphill bridge traffic...but practice makes perfect. Its been a year now and I have no probs whatsoever. Right now I can engage really smoothly in 1st and 2nd and double clutching. I can heel toe too but not in my sleep yet. I think the Z gets you so hyped to drive you wanna learn to truly drive the car the way it deserves to be driven
[QUOTE=SuperBlack350]with the z, i don't believe you will ever fully learn how to drive it smoothly. You think you have, but you'll see how that will quickly change on another day.

I learned 2 weeks ago when i first got my 04 Z. Engagement point is ridiculously high. I got it used so I'm sure it's because the old driver wore it out a bit, but still. You'll get used to it fast, I did. Oh and I really let it fly for the first time today...damn this car is fast, and it grips the road like crazy.
And you guys complain too much. This car has a great clutch and a fairly smooth transition. I tried to drive a mini cooper today (the ones from before bmw took over) and i just couldn't do it. Granted the car is 25+ years old.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with good days and bad days, but mostly good days.

I think most people are implying that it's a shame to abuse the clutch on a new Z, assuming that there would be wear & tear from the stalling that would inevitably come with learning how to drive a stick for the very first time.
Most suggest that they would much rather get in a Z already knowing how to drive stick, but whatever, you know? The manual transmission on the Z is actually fairly straighforward and easy to use, not vague and rubbery with effed-up friction points like other manuals.
I learned on an 07 too, well I "learned" on a 03 PT cruiser but you don't truely learn how to drive until its your own. I'm still not smooth, and second gear seams so clunky sometimes, and I still try to avoid hills.

My dad actually taught me that, and one my friends told me only pussies drive like that.
LOL
So he showed me another way, I keep my right foot on the brake and let the clutch out about 1/2 way right before the engagment point. When you take your foot off the brake and doesn't roll back as far or at all, and you can actually give it some throttle and slip it real quick so you don't stall out. S'how I do it, but I'm still kinda shaky, on wet days I use the ebrake. I'm pretty good at it as long as its not a crazy steep hill.

i do that too
i used the e-brake a few times, but found that i liked finding the engagement point while my foot was still on the brake a bit better. you can actually get it pretty well engaged before it starts to bog the engine down too much
