Cars are totalled @ 80% of local book value. Insuance companies have a service they subscribe to to figure out local value of vehicles. Sometimes its more than KBB, sometimes less, but damage above 80% is ussually considered totalled.
A good way to dispute value is to provide recent ads, newpaper, web, or dealer sticker for a like make and model within your zip if you're on the border of totalled or not totalled. Sometimes if you're close to the line you can sweet talk your adjuster into totalling it, or have the body shop put it over the line by requesting another supplement.

Yea soo now i feel all you guys pain, pulled onto my street when i get a call from my neighbor, "so when did the tree fall on your car?"....i'm like what??? It wasn't even that windy, the tree was about 50-60 feet long....yea the car took the brunt of the damage....i'll try to post pics once the shock wears off...sorry to hijack your thread...good luck with the build
