Conditions (AC, temperature) vs Acceleration (HP)
I put an HAI on my S-10 today that I bought on ebay for $60. I do think the mfgrs dont use them because of the noise, although they sound much better to me. Although, the Dinan CF CAI on my wifes bmw made a high pitch whine, which is why she wanted to trade it in for the Lexus.

from this picture it looks like a hot air intake would easily fit and get some gains. I don't know how a cold air intake would be placed. the factory tubing looks good
the only bad thing i see is the restrictive panel type filter and the plastic tubing that attracts heat. Aluminum tubing reflects heat better and might have a tiny bit better flow.

Thanks for all the discussion regarding CAIs vs HAIs.
I did indeed know of the true CAIs which involved rerouting the air intake to a location outside the engine bay. My concern was with people who incorrectly use the phrase "cold air intake" to describe the simple open element intakes (hot air intake, HAI, SRI, etc).
Like I mentioned in my previous post, lots of people use the phrase CAI incorrectly, such as on Audiworld. For example, they say, "Hey, I just got LLtek's CAI kit..." But this kit is *not* a CAI. And dang it, LLtek even calls it one on their website. (http://www.lltek.com/aik.htm)
Oh, and for what it's worth, not all cars will see performance increases with an HAI. Depends on how much heat is in the engine bay. The Audi cars with 1.8t engines will usually see a drop in performance due to the intake being right next to the very hot turbo, despite the decreased flow restriction. People have to go to great lengths to shield the intake element to heat.
But anyway, I was just trying to clear up any misunderstandings.

All I know is that my Accord has a turbo boost button just like Kitt from Knight Rider. I labeled it "AC" so nobody would know. Also, it's reversed in function. When the light is on, the car's interior gets very cold. But, when I push it and the light goes off.....vroom!
In a more serious tone, I have longed for a car where I'd have the ability to run the AC and not notice a drop in the acceleration. I bet the Z will be it.

I read the posts with great interest because I think the same way that Vic does, but I am reluctant to use a CAI because of the possibility of water getting in and ruining the engine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't NISMO offer only the drop in filter in the stock box? I put a K&N dropin element in my MR2T and the noise increased, but I'm not sure the power did.
Maybe some people equate loudness with power, I don't know. I also used a dropin K&N in my 97 Accord and it sounded better, but I don't think it was any faster. I do know some mags, in testing the Z, mentioned improvements in air flow, intake and exhaust and "hotter" cams were required to move the Z to 287hp over the other Nissan cars using the VQ engine. Some of you may need to experiment a lot to unlock more power in the Z. Whatever it may be, it sounds expensive.
Boomer--just thinking.
