Isnt NJ the highest car insurance in the country? Its amazing how low some insurance rates are in some parts of the country.
NYC, Male, 24, single, 1 moving violation (illegal left turn, 5 years ago)
My insurance for the Z would be 2,200 for the year

My insurance company is tryin to screw me. I went in there telling them the situation. My Z is strictly pleasure...I have a 92 Buick Regal that I drive daily. They said sure, 500$ for 6 months for the Z and my usual 120$ a month for the Buick. I've had my Z for about 3 monthz now...its got 1300 miles on it. Weekend use only...and on those weekend days, its weather permitting. I've not been in it for almost 3 weekends now because I was out of town 1 week...then the weather was crap the next 2. I'm 22.

Originally I was gonna go with a Celica because I love the look...but when I took one for a test drive, then I tested a Z. I fell inlove with the Z. My insurance company after 1 month...switched it because the 'underwriters' are following the rules of "rate on the highest premium/more expensive car" ...when I take it out like 1 day on the weekend I'll put 100-150 miles on it a pop. Just crusin around. They don't understand that once I get $ saved up, its gonna be off the road a few weekends here and there as I start modding. Plus, its bein taken off the road 6 months of the year (winters in NY suck ***) and now I'm gonna be rated on the Buick. So they sting me twice. Now they want 1000+ every 6 months for the Z and dropped my Buick down to a 'pleasure vehicle' rate...at around 45$ a month.

LMFAO. So...the difference per month worked out to be about 50$ more a month. 50$'s that could be saved for mods. I'm using more gas a month, plus I got other bills. And I worked for 7 months, 70 hours a week between 2 jobs to get a 10G downpayment on the Z...which is still 525 a month. I'm paying close to 800 a month just to maintain the Z and my dailydriver on the road during the summer. I make around 1200 a month...luckily after taxes. But its killin me cause I'm strapped for cash after other normal bills/gas and I'm gonna have pretty much a factory car for 5 years till this b*tch is payed off.

I've griped about this a lot...lmao. Sorry to put ya all thru it but...christ, workin so hard for minimal enjoyment kinda sucks. If I had gone with the Celi I woulda atleast been able to keep some of my downpayment, and still been paying LESS per month...and been able to mod it somewhat. Ah well...I got a better car tho...

I fear insurance at 22....I don't know how your family can go into a Z headstrong when you're only 17??

Thats not many years of driving experience under your belt. You combine that with the potent combination of having one of the faster cars on the road (in proportion to everything else of course). To the insurance company, you are a high-risk factor.

I'm sure you're not the only kid out there that has the same situation but statistics are statistics. The insurance company is going to go with what they believe will dampen their expenses, increase their earnings, and decrease their liabilties.

You're not just paying for yourself but for the thousands of other 17 year olds who have a clean record, drive expensive cars, and are likely to get into a heinous accident due to their inexperience.

Good luck bro...since I'm sitting on the same spectrum as you are..but i'm sure you'll understand this bureacracy as you get older.

Hmmm . . . the fact that neither yourself or either one of your parents actually got quotes for insurance on the vehicle locked in, prior to purchase seems like a hugh oversight. You can't really blame the insurance co. because you blindly walked into this deal and found out that insurance rates would be so high.

That's like those people who say " I never knew I was charged $2100 for pinstriping! Who has time to read the sales contract when you buy a car?"

Plus, if your parents where willing to pay $5000 for insurance, I would think that you would be able to come up with the difference of $3000. That's approx $250/month. Spend less money on frivilous crap and use the money from your job, if you have one, towards the insurance on a car that you love so much. If your not willing to even pay $250/month yourself, perhaps you don't deserve to drive the Z.

Having said that, in a lot of states, you can get a bond equal to the amount of liability insurance required by the state. Your parents may not be able to use that money, however it may be better than dumping $8000 annually for insurance.

I don't think any of your dates in high school are worth $8000. That's like donating a CBR 600 RR to your insurance co. each year. No ***** is worth that much dinero . . . and really, do you need a Z to get yourself dates?

Also, wouldn't it be cheaper if your parents are listed as the primary driver and you would, "on occasion", drive the Z, even though this may not be the case?

Me personally, I would never pay that much for insurance. You are paying approx $666/ month for insurance, which is essentially a car payment each month. Since your parents have paid for the car, maybe it's not such a bad deal for you to come up with the insurance cost or at least part of it. $666 is an evil number.

EDIT: Oops, I was going to mention the primary driver thing, but now I see DBZ already did.

I mentioned the primary driver thing to my mom. My dad (Lexus SC430) and my mom (Lexus LX470) both all ready have cars for them. I said to put me as an occaisional driver on the car but supposedly no can do.

My parents reduced their premium. So now I don't cost nearly as much as I did before. Before they paid like 11-13k. Now they pay 15k. Not too bad of an increase. Sooo problem solved. No more ridiculous insurance. Just going to cost a bit more if one of us gets in an accident.

Lightbulb WOW!!!

I'm 27 - I've received (3) tickets for speeding and attended traffic school for all three ('92, '95 & '02). I have a two car policy and my current rate for my Z is $475.00 every 6 months. I have found out where you live makes a BIG difference. I changed from one zip code to another and my rates went up!!! All I did was move 3 miles.

Ohh well - no worries....

man even your parents are getting ripped off if they pay 11k a year in insurance thats insane. I am 19 and drive a z but i use the partial driver trick and only pay 200 a month. DOnt try to tell us that going to school is hard work and takes up all your time studying, if you dont have to work at all and your parents buy you everything you will never truly appreciate the effort others spend in trying to capture their dreams. I worked my a@@ off for 3 yrs to get this car. Life just isnt fair sometimes.

NJ insurance sucks!!! I would suggest doing some serious shopping around, and possible put the car under one of your parents names. I'm sure you can do better that 8,000. You can probably afford to by a cheap used junk car, and put that as your primary and then put the z as the secondary and still save money. I am going to be paying about 2,500 for the Z and the wife's Jetta. I'm 27 with a clean record.

It must be nice. I wish my parents made enough money to sponsor 30k for the car + 8 k for insurance / year. Your parents need to adopt me.

I am not a hater but there is plenty of cars that are good for you. RSX, Integra, WRX, Mustang etc. Even a used kraut car would be nice 1999 & up. 330i with some nice 18's would do the trick and you be paying 3k/yr prolly.

Those are cars that have a decent price and you won't pay $$$ out the *** for insurance.

I just don't think Z is not meant for a 17 yr old sorry my view say what you will. But in the end you shouldn't complain your parents are writing the check so whats the big deal anyways?

And now you have to be careful as hell with your Z. Because if you reck it say Bye Bye to the Z and get ready for 1983 ford escort. I would have rather have had semi nice car at your age that I don't have to worry about 24 / 7. I actually drove a beat up toyota 4x4 but I lived in Utah and it made roads safe. Dude was that thing fun, my insurance was nothin and it was the most fun car I had. College sucked I drove a saturn sc1 lol still dated a hot chick though. So I guess its not in the car.

Right now I am 25 already paid for the car and my insurance is 2300/year.

PS dude don't give me the argument about High School being such a chore. i worked played sports had 3 aps junior year and 5 aps senior year and was on the honor roll 3.7 above gpa.

BIG WHOOP if you can't manage to get above 3.5 in high school you are an IDIOT BTW I didn't even speak english.

At least give your parents the props why can't kids say that "MY PARENTS ARE RICH THEY BOUGHT ME THE Z" its simple dude. See.

Default Haters?

TriX,
Great story, very good points!

I am not a hater. I think it is great that good kids get a car to drive, but when parents give their 16 year old kid a $35,000 high performance sports car before they have been on the road a few years...??? Whats wrong with a Focus,Civic, Matrix, ...for a first car. You want to buy your kid a "Z"? Maybe that could be the college graduation gift. When you go to learn to fly, do they stick you in a F14 fighter plane? Flight schools start you out in a slow Cessna for a reason.

Parents, what kind of life expectations do we set kids up for if we "GIVE" them a car like a new "Z" at 16. Does it make your kid feel better about his/her self? Having "stuff" does not give any kid long term happiness. (otherwise known as "retail therapy")

And then the whining about the cost of the insurance.....Just shows how this practice produces yet another entitled little brat that the rest of the world has to deal with.

Scott

Amen - let the kid earn his "Stripes" first. Besides, every single person I grew up with that had a high performance car - had more trouble than those who had the pacer, grimlin, pinto, escort, I-mark (mine), etc....

Besides, what's the hurry kids??????

I agree that getting a Z when 16 or 17 is a bit rediculous, but if I were in his shoes I would take it. wouldn't you guys?

I didn't mean to start this thread as whining. I started it just to share what happened to me. Some people, including some of you say "Why do you care, its not your money?" are totally contradicting themselves. You hate on me then tell me not to care about money, as if I have no concept at all of what things cost. I will say it. MY PARENTS ARE RICH AND BOUGHT ME THE Z. Hell I know I don't deserve it, it was their choice to get it for me. As for getting a Civic, Matrix etc. Those cars are just not for me. I am vehemently anti-rice and I don't think I could survive owning one of those cars. Especially the Matrix, That thing looks riced out from the factory . I enjoy the 350Z community, overall everyone is pretty knowledgeable, kind, and welcoming. Its a shame some people have such an overwhelming amount of jealousy.

I don't use my car as a status symbol. I don't drive like crazy. Hell, I am conservative. I go 5 over max. This car is going to be with me for a long time. I don't want to hurt it.

As for my parents insurance, by reducing our deductible we have reduced my insurance. Thanks for commenting, many of you share the same feelings as me. Thank you for your advice. Hope to see you all at a meet sometime soon!
