D'Oh, I used to do the commute from Milpitas to Palo Alto, and I can tell you, it was probably not your fault for either. For some reason, I have noticed that the Bay Area commuters tend to get pushy and racy around sports/sporty cars. When I had a 98 Mustang GT Conv., as soon as you look like you are about to change lanes, the other cars speed up or try to make the same lane change, if they are behind you, just so they can be in front?!!?!?! What gives??? Oh well, I usually will turn the blinker on, and wait a sec or two then commit the lane change. You will be able to see them within that sec or two.

Best of luck on those freeways down there, I almost got run off the road in my Z by a freakin' Soccer mom in a Previa!

When I first got the car I thought he was going to be a huge problem, but I was wrong. I've never had a problem yet, I can see very well through the rear if I just tilt my head down slightly & side mirrors are fine as well.

I honestly think the view out the back sucks (i'm 6'2") but i'm proficient at using the side view mirrors as i have driven trucks in the past. You should adjust the sides outward so that you aren't looking down the side of your car this will help keep your blind spot to a minimum.
