You want a turbo kit for the 350Z??

Well just got my reply back from Mr. Eric Hsu at XS engineering. (you know. those guys that turbo'd the IS300) well he said that they're planning to turbo their 350Z when they get it later next month.
if he had enough interest from fellow 350Z drivers, he would think of a bolt on kit manufacturing run... but alas. a custom job, esp with the Z's engine bay so packed, could run upwards to $5k->$8.5k ..
but hey. at least we'd be the first on the street with a blown 350Z
anyone interested?

Thanks for the offer... but why not just wait until Oct/Nov next year (2003) when Nissan shows a turbo (or supercharged) 350Z off that will most likely hit dealers in 2004?
I know for a fact they've got the card up their sleeve, the question isn't if they'll play it, it's when.
It's coming, trust in that. They'll need something to fight Toyota's new Supra and Mazda's new RX7... the stock 350Z won't do it, unfortunately. Toyota is going to do a V6 Supra to compete aginst the 350Z, with a V8 Supra as their higher end model so if we all put our hands together, maybe Nissan will introduce the 350ZR as being a 4.5 V8 with the eight speed paddle shift tranny?
How they'd shoehorn a V8 into it I am unsure, but it has been done in testing... whether it's road safe or what, no idea.

if i wanted to go FI on my Z , i would go wid turbo. i dont like that cheap FI "supercharger". lolz

The only thing Nissan is currently considering is if they are going to go TT VQ35 in the GTR or if they are going to go V8. There are no plans in the works right now for a turbo Z. Many people are confusing these Z looking test mules for a Turbo Z.
I also don't think it will be such a good idea to add aftermarket forced induction of any kind. I have never seen it done with factory reliability. Even the TRD superchargers have been giving Toyota nothing but problems. I helped my friend install his Jackson Racing supercharger in his Miata and he has had nothing but problems. Go talk to any of the Honda guys that have turbo kits in their cars and you will soon find out that going the turbo route isn't such a good idea either.

Ahhh... gotta love the community love,
its ok. i will throw on a turbo. soon enough.
its not about being naive, its about knowing your limits.
if i can do only do 7-8psi, then so be it
but you know, they said that about the maxima 3.0L too. and i got it to run 9.5psi.
Thanks for your comments,

Jay...
Your source in Japan reported that the NISMO is working on kits that will boost the HP to 400plus. But if the 350ZR is definitely coming in 2k4..... isn't that either the NISMO kits or the 350ZR a bit unnecessary
And Jay, if Supra will have a V6 to match the 350Z, how much will the V6 Supra be??
Also the 350ZR will be build to go against the V8 Supra, how much do you think the 350ZR and the V8 Supra will be???

The September issue of Road and Track has some info about the new Supras. The 4.3L V8 was likely coming in at 350HP in the $40K to $45K price range. They made a comment about the V8 version being done to compete in the Japanese market. It did not mention whether or not the V8 was headed for the USA. The V6 Supra is said to have around 280HP and will be priced in the $30K range. Looks like the sports car wars between the Japanese auto makers has restarted. Let the fun begin.

Kai... my source in Japan, Takahasi, told me a few months back that Nismo was working on parts to increase the Z's horsepower to over 400hp, yes. He suggested that they were going to created the ZR this way.
I have no clue if this plan is still int he workd but the ZR, based on past Nissan ZR series, will be a limited edition race inspired 350Z that most likely will be one bad *** car.
Sure we can buy the parts and do it ourselves to a regular Z as Tak told me... but it'd be cheaper (I am guessing, since you're buying it all at once) as a ZR... at least, I hope so.
Nismo just did that with their race car, 450hp to be more precise. So my source was right, as I stated three months back or so. The only thing he has been wrong on thus far was the 0-60 and final hp stats. He claims they were changed for insurance reasons, because any tech that has seen the 350Z's engine up close will tell you there is a GREAT DEAL of room for extra hp if you know what you're doing.
Heck, anyone with a clue and a few hundred extra will be able to push it up to 300hp really easy. Maybe a little more than a few hundred... that was a figure of speech but my point is, the engine's intake car be modified big time. We haven't started to discuss something as simple as the air filter. Some might be surprised to learn how much can be obtained with the proper air filter. Rumor has it the Nismo filter will give better gains than a
K & N which myself, I'll have to see stats on to really take serious.
K & N are king of the hill!
I am really excited about seeing what can be done with the car to drop the weight, a carbon hood, carbon nose cone with better air intake, heck... what else can we switch out?

I would be leery of forced induction on a Z. The compression ratio is 10.3 as opposed to my MR2T's 8.8. Are you planning on adding an intercooler as well? The enemy of FI cars is heat and if you can't control it, your engine will turn into scrap quickly.
If you put in new pistons and other low compression goodies , your engine might survive for quite a while.
Is the engine compartment large enough without cutting and rerouting a bunch of components underhood? I would advise you get some very professional help before you start such a project; I certainly would.
Ten years ago Sports Car Illustrated did a comparison on a stock MR2T and an HKS version with a bigger turbo , etc. They admitted the HKS car was faster but almost undrivable on the street. It seems the bigger turbo had gigantic lag and when it kicked in the car took off like a rocket. Good fun for a short time but lousy drivability on the street is a major pain in the *** when all you want to do is get from one place to another without hassles.

I'm certainly no expert, but it would make me very nervous to use FI on an engine not designed for it. I guess 3-5 might be ok, my turbo was about 7 with the intercooler.
I don't know, it seems like a crap shoot to me; will my engine survive or not? How big an intercooler?

Not sure if someone mentioned this yet but I got to see the 350Z in person recently and the engine bay looked really really cramp. I can't see how you would be able to fit a turbo kit in it unless a bump on hood was created.
