i'm new and this is my first post but let me say
I had a 91 mr2 turbo with only 44k on it that i bought for $7,000 back when I was 19 (2001) and i regret selling it a few years later so I would save up and get a Z, they arent going anywhere but finding an MR2 that is in good shape is tough

You eihter have never driven an MR2 turbo, or you drove one with a larger, aftermarket turbo.
And the MKII (second generation) looks nothing like a Fiero. And all turbos are MKIIs.

i went from a 1987 bmw 325 is .completely rebuilt with m3 engine components. .was begged by a customer to let her go to em for a very good amount of cash. .so i went to an auction with a friend picked up an 03 performance z for 20k with 8,000k on it. .and i've been happy ever since. .was a new experience and i got to redo a child hood dream of "hooking up" a car!!. .so if u love the mr2 stick with it. .if u wanna try something new and have the $$$$ then go for it. .

I would at least test drive the Z to decide for yourself.
It will be much cheaper to make the Mr2 much faster than trying to build a Z.
The comment about the MR2 having lots of lag is way off. Lag would be dependent on the turbo chosen and the stock ct26 has a very fast fooling twin entry design.
I have a 2003 Track 350z and I drove my friend's SW20 with a 3rd gen swap and it was considerably faster than my Z with him on stock boost.
He added an open downpipe and ran low 8s in the 1/8th of a mile. (8.4, if I remember correctly.) And that was w/o touching the boost or anything else after the engine swap.
Of course the ceramic turbo on the 3rd gen engine has even less lag than the ct26 and makes even more power.
If you don't mind working on a car that is fairly old, I would keep the MR2. The Z is much easier to work on, IMHO but I think the MR2 is a better performance choice.
Also with little work, if you already have not done anything the MR2's look can be updated. The build on the MR2 is also a leap beyond that of the 2003 Z. I have a 1992 Gtfour w/ a 3rd gen swap and it is much more solid than my Z and over built throughout.
I do love my Z, but I also love Toyota.
Shame you can't have both.
Edit: If you must have a NEWER car, also consider the S2000.

DON'T LET THAT MR2 GO!!! Save that car and buy the Z when you can afford it without trading in.

Why can't you just keep both of them? Ones paid off assume and the other would have a payment. Then you would have the best of both worlds.
Really two Sports cars are fun but not practical, a SUV and a SC are totally opposites and would be best.
Unless you just want a Z keep your MR2 Turbo moded its still a SC. The 350Z is just the latest of greatest overall reasonablly priced Sports Cars. But keep in mind the 09-10 is just about to come out, if you are going to TT yours its will be faster then the Stock 370Z. Most likely.

Its hard to say which one has the most potential in suspension tuning. But stock for stock, its fairly close.
