Default Burning smell

yes, i have searched this, and none of the results relate.

i have a stock '07. tonight, i decided to show my friend what the Z would do. i started the car, let the engine warm up properly (took about 5 minutes), and then, i gunned it--redlined every gear through 3rd.

well, everything seems all right, but when i got home, it smelt like something (not the clutch or tires) burning. i'm a firefighter where i live and i've smelt the same thing at vehicle fires (more of a plastic smell than a rubber one). it's coming from under the hood. no warning lights on, and the car was driving fine. maybe i'm just being paranoid.

Its probably just the factory coatings burning off the exhaust or headers. How many miles, how long have you had it, stick-auto???

Normally if your Z is new, when the cars get shipped from japan they spray an anti rust or corrosive stuff in the engine bay and it will smell almost like your buring your clutch but its not that, its natural and it will go away... but thats just if your cars new, if not, you got me....

The first time when I dove my Z home from the lot, was about a 30 mile or so drive and the smell could kill something that was already dead before. All kinds of heat related smells, from under the hood. went away after a week or two.

I'm curious about this as well - 6mt Touring, '07. I have probably 6500 miles on it, and still get that burning smell. Thought it was the clutch breaking in at first, but I'm wondering now that I've got the miles on it that I have.

Could have some kind of leak, that burns off on the headers? Since you live in Chicago, maybe with the colder weather it takes longer for those factory smells to burn off and go away.

If I come home from a hard drive, it still sometimes smells a little. 24,000 miles, 2 years old. I'm not worried about it. Probably my painted calipers.

Seems normal. Ive noticed many cars including mine, that have that burning smell when the engine was being pushed hard.

when i test drove my car at the dealership, it had that same sort of smell after i was done test driving it.

he told me that it was just the coating they put on some of the parts to protect it when it sits on the lot.

rain, cold, heat, etc. stuff like that.
it's normal, don't worry too much about it.

I wonder if it's the clutch? Go read the thread about the clutch issues with the 07 and see if it's like your experence.

I've read this thread a couple of times - worried me a bit while I was waiting for my Z to arrive - I was afraid it would happen to me - "glass is always half empty." Anyways, none of those symptoms are aparent to me. I've never pushed it really hard. Kind of limited on places to run hard in a big city. I'm pretty sure they put Mobil 1 in it though - Maybe I'll get that swapped and see what happens.
