Wouldn't worry about it. If you redline my Z and the wind is blowing the right direction, you get a slight burning smell as well. '03, 64k miles.

FYI...5 minutes isnt really enough time to warm the engine up properly...at least i've noticed in my 07. i watch the oil pressure until it is around 30 psi at idle. i think that is a good indication. takes ~15 minutes. keep in mind that it isn't just the engine either that needs to warm up. tranny and diff need time too...i wont take my car over 3k rpm's until i've been driving at least 15 min...just my 2 cents, though.

I get that same smell when i run it hard aswell. To be specific, the smell was there when i first drove it...went away...drove it harder...smell came back...went away...drove it even harder..smell came back...went away. since then i've redlined and ran it hard and the smell came back but i think it is the exhaust sealers..the gasket things that melt to fasten the exhaust. I feel it's a heat issue. Once you run it at its max potential, smell should be gone permanently.

i know man. the car hadn't been off long before i restarted it. temp gauge in the middle and oil pressure low. it was well prepared.

Wow, this is forum is amazing .... i just faced the problem today and here I get the replies .. thanks you all for your contributions ....

Well I am a newBie ... just bought my first Z, 07 2.4K on it ... got oil changes today only juss to be on safer side ....

I asked the manager about what’s the best time to start driving after a cold start ... his answer was quite opposite to what i have read till now... he said you don’t have to wait for a prolonged time after a cold start, in not that super cold temp .... he said 1 min or so is ok ... he also added that if you keep car running idle for a long time it might be bad for the engine... what you all say ....

If it was your clutch you would smell it in the car instantly, and very strongly. I've burnt my clutch in several vehicles over the years and they all smelled the same. My worst burn was dropping to 2nd gear at 85 mph instead of 4th. Rear tires lost traction instantly and clutch burnt hard. It stank for 5-10 minutes in the car with the windows down on the highway and I instantly pushed the clutch back in when I realized what happened. So it was only engaged for a fraction of a second.

But the smell is unmistakeable. When you burn the clutch you'll know it for sure.

I say give your oil enough time to circulate. I watch the rpms. They start at around 2k or so when I first start it, then they slowly decrease as the engine runs. When my rpms drop to about 1k then I know my car is ready to drive. Usually takes 20-30 seconds or so. I still wait a few more minutes before getting on it hard though.
