How are you gonna make +20~25 whp? Justifiably and cost effectively I mean. The HR really is a lot nicer, and to get the DE to output that kind of power is going to void warranty for sure.
I'm wrestling the same issue with my '05. But if I'm willing to fall $3000 - $4000 back in the hole, I might as well get a clutch/flywheel combo and pulleys too, because I'm rounding up to 40k miles. And besides, I'm not too big on hp (you can tell by my mods), but it is always fun to have more. Dunno. Whadya think?

IMO it would be a horrible decision financially. The new Z comes out within a year with more power and then you'll be in the same place. Buy a plenum spacer for your 06 a nice exhaust system and you'll have the same amount of power. If it really bothers you, you could also just go buy the 07 hood and you'll never tell the difference.

You will take a hit financially. You lost probably $2000 when you drove the car off the lot, and now it's a year old and has 8k miles on it so let's call that another $2000. You also paid $1k or whatever in tax/tags/etc., so currently you are $5k behind where you were the day before you drove it away. Then you'll lose another $2k when you drive the new one off the lot. So based on these (erroneous) numbers you would be 'losing' a large portion of the cost to have a turbo system installed (even a single turbo, for this example) that will make the car go much faster than a stock HR.

I can relate to what you are saying though. I was really tempted to trade up when I saw the 2007's come out, but what really kept me from doing it was all of the aftermarket stuff I had installed on my 2006 and how much of a pain it would have been to strip it all off (exhaust, stereo, side skirts, etc.). That's another thing to keep in mind - when you get that 2007/2008 model and if you keep hanging around this place, you will want to mod it which digs you an even deeper hole financially. Now on the other hand, none of us know what your financial situation is and maybe a thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket for you. If that's the case, then why not just go out and get whatever you want? I would if I could.

Even when the 380Z or whatever comes out, why not just dish out 15g's and have 500-600 whp? Just keep the nice ride you already have..
edit: FI is the <only> way to go

Although another real issue regarding the "why not just dump more money into the current car" is that you can't finance a turbo kit for 5 years, you need to have all the cash ready (or be ready to carry a mean balance on your CC)

That's true, but you don't need to buy the entire kit all at once. You can slowly build the kit part by part as your money and finances free up.

Understood and agreed. Although we also have to factor in here that if the guy is considering taking a ~5k hit to gain maybe 15 or 20 HP then he's probably into instant gratification as well.

Or, if you're a student on loans, take the hit and go FI

I'm sure some of you have actually done this, so any input is appreciated.

I traded my 06 for an 07 and it was totally worth it to me. I tend to keep cars for a long time and knew I could not live with the 06. It was an oil burner, it pinged, and it was not any faster than my 97 M3 that I was coming from I just wanted to get rid of it. The 07 is definitely faster than the 06 - more low-end torque and definitely more top-end. Puts a smile on my face every day. But I made that trade almost 9 months ago.

We're getting closer to when the new Z will come out, if I were you and your 06 is not an oil burner, I'd wait. If the new z comes out and you don't like it, you'll be able to pick up an 07 or 08 for cheap.

I am already tempted to buy the new z when it comes out, but when I think about it, how much more power do I need? I mostly just drive the 1.5 miles to work and back and then hit some twisties on the weekend for fun. Even the GTR is tempting, but when would I need/use all that power? I have plenty of other hobbies that need my money. I am saving up for a $7k mountain bike . I live it pitiful CA, so I can't go FI (I gotta keep it all legal). If I really need more power at some point, I would to go 4.2 NA, if I can get away with the smog side of things.

If you have a 6mt, buy the MREV2 lower collector and 5/16th spacer and wait it out. You'll be glad you did.

I used a motordyne MREV2 and spacer, but that was on my 06 DE engine. No intake plenum mods for the 07/08. It really doesn't need any mods, although Exhaust is very tempting.

When I sold my 06, I put it back to stock and used the lower collector and spacer on my wife's 06. Her 06 is tight and it does not use ANY oil at all.

Those mods are the best mods for your $$ you can get for the DE revup engine. Night and day! (to me anyway, YMMV) And, it provides a nice intake growl up front when you get on it!

nismo exhaust is soooo tempting for me. quick story:

a friend of mine works at the nissan dealership and was the one who sold me my Z. on the day i came in for the test drive, they had just got an 08 mb nismo. long story short, he tossed me the keys to test drive and told me to come back in a couple hours.

everything about that machine was incredible. word of advice: don't test drive the best car on the lot, it makes whatever you're settling on seem really lame....

hhahaha. still love my 08 carbon grey base model.

My 06 is actually an A/T, so no oil consumption issues. I love the car, but the temptation is always there to get something a little better. I think I'm going to keep it and see what the next iteration of the Z looks like, I could do much worse then where I'm currently at.

Would anyone actually consider buying the new Z in the first year it comes out? remember all the stuff ups with the 03's (tire feathering, oil consumption...) Better to wait a year or two till they sort their car out. I'd never buy a car in its first year of production.

I agree - I'm planning on keeping mine until the 370 comes out - then decide what I want to do. Mine is also an auto with no issues - so I'll enjoy it for another year or two (or three) - we'll see.

They're just minor upgrades on the 07/08. The only problem with the car was that it had clutch issues, which was easily fixed and not everyone had it.
