Why is weight such a big concern with the Z?
Why is weight such a big factor with the Z? I noticed that the Evo MR or GSR weighs 3725lbs and Subura STi weighs 3530lbs about 290-300 bph with that same amount of torque these cars still pull 4.9 or 5.1 0-60 times.
The 350z at 3350lbs touring 03-05 still only doing 5.6-5.8 and the 06-08s about the same weight is doing 5.3 or 5.2. Does a turbo and awd mean that much, I guess so but I'm just wondering why?
Now my stock 05 350Z is faster then I can drive it, I've only been to 135mph in it that is the same speed that I chicken out at in my na80zx, na87zx and na92zx, the 05 is faster then any of them. I guess I freeze going any faster turns scare me at that speed. I guess I'm too old even way back then.
But why is weigh such a factor with the 350Z? The Evo and Sti is just as heavy or heavier. IMO 350Z looks so much cooler of course I'm bias. Are we still comparing ourselves to $50k-$65k Porsche 2800-3100lbs or hell a Corvette with a 400-500hp V8 in weighs less, technology cost money I guess.

135mph is fast enough. I've done 150 in my previous car. Looking back I think it was rather foolish of me. I guess once is fine, but once you've done it and been there, it's not worth the risks involved. But, AWD is a big reason why the accelerate off the line better than the Z.

launching is difficult in the z no doubt about it. at the same time run an evo or sti on the highway from third gear and he has no chance. but let me tell you these cars shine on the track. if you can figure out how to drive the car and come out of the corners you will tear people up and its also a great experience. ya the z will do 160 i have tested, but i wouldnt advise anyone to do it. i feel comfortable in this car up to 135, when it gets into the 145s i start feeling the car starting to lift. that also means i need aerodynamics to keep the car down.

Yeah AWD is the key for those cars, if all I did was city driving to my work, id love to have one of those STi's, but when I see one its hard to take those things seriously because their so out there with the styling(mostly that spoiler)

AWD is great for launches. 5.5k clutch drop in a Z - toasted tires. In a DSM or EVO, it means great times... although in my case it eventually meant grenaded center differential. Yikes!

And OP: I don't know where you got those weights from, but neither the Evo or STi weigh that much. Both past gens weigh 3250lbs.

hmm...are you sure about this? i dont race or anything, but i really think with equal drivers the evo and the sti are the faster cars? I could be wrong tho, but thats what i always thought
