100 bucks says it was leaving RPM performance shop.....some guy being an idiot....its a shame
They said on the news that the driver of the Z was not the owner. That he was testdriving a car that he had worked on. Not sure how true that is, but they showed his pic. That was a couple of blocks down from RPM.

It was wet, and even without a turbo or nitrous, summer tires would have been dangerous. This gives us all a bad name. "Suped up car" was how they stated it. I wonder if RPM will be implicated.

Well, to the general public, a honda civic with an exhaust tip is considered "souped up".

It looks like they installed a Turbo kit and nitrous. I believe someone stated the shop was called RPM Performance

Sucks a lot more for the driver of the car.
Owner can always get another car, driver can't get another life?

So the story is the owner had his Z in a shop to install a turbo & nitrous and then the mechanic test drove it on the city street??

My sympathy to the mechanic and his family. But is it just me, I smell lawsuit??

RPM likes to cut corners, so I am curious to see if they even have sufficient insurance to cover this situation. I like the shop owner Kyle as a person....but as a business person...well thats a bit different

the wreckage doesn't look like it was high speed, maybe 50Mph than brakes dropping the speed to 35 tops right before impact?

I wonder if Nos is what went up in flames.

I used to handle commercial liability claims. I hope they are covered well.

Witnesses say that the car was doing in excess of 100 before it lost control.

Also, the new article talks more about the mechanic and RPM:

"James Edward Turner III, 35, died at the wheel in a crash that stunned onlookers and involved a collision with a truck in the 4700 block of West Broad Street.

The wreck occurred almost directly in front of Richmond Performance Modifications, known as R.P.M., at 4705 W. Broad St. Turner's family said last night that he had worked at R.P.M. for several years.

"Cars were his passion," said Turner's father, James E. Turner Jr. of Richmond.

Turner III was married and had two children, his father said. He graduated from Kennedy High School, which has merged with Armstrong High School.

Richmond police kept both directions of Broad Street closed from Westmoreland Street to Staples Mill Road for more than four hours after the crash to clean up the scene and investigate.

Richmond fire crews responded at 9:19 a.m. to reports of a car on fire and a person trapped inside, said Richmond fire spokesman Lt. Michael Oprandy. Authorities later found a person dead inside a red Nissan sports car, which had collided with a white Ford F-350 pickup truck.

Oprandy said authorities haven't determined whether the victim died as a result of the crash or the fire. The investigation is continuing.

Turner's father said authorities have not informed the family about what may have caused the crash.

A representative of R.P.M. could not be reached last night for comment.

Witnesses said the truck had just pulled out of a fast-food restaurant into the westbound lanes of Broad when the collision occurred, but police said they were unable to verify the details surrounding the crash.

Both vehicles ended up smashed together in the eastbound lanes of Broad, and wreckage was strewn more than 100 feet in both directions.

A company Web site describes R.P.M. as "Richmond's Ultimate Discount Autosalon Superstore, established in 1985" and says it offers an array of customizing options for high-performance vehicles, and performance-enhancement elements such as fuel injection and nitrous-oxide systems
