There was an issue in my area where a few places got deliveries of gas with water in their tanks.. a bunch of cars had to be towed and fixed by the gas stations. You should look into this...

Do you use the highest pump octane? 91-93?

The thread title made me laugh a little inside

even using a lower octane occasionally shouldn't have a noticeable affect on the engine like that. especially on a well maintained Z which I know everyone on this forum has . and to the op, did this occur right after filling up? or did it just start to happen after 1/2 tank of gas.

It definitley will. Lower octane will trip the knock sensor, and cause teh eCU to retard timing.

This happened to me. The car died one mile from the gas station. Water leaked into the tank from a faulty cap.

Up in No. NJ at a Lukoil on the Parkway at about exit 153. A few days ago, every car that got gas had their car just die on the side of the road. They were lined up for a few miles. They had to drain every tank and refill... what a mess...

1OO% sure that Texaco, Esso/Enco/Exxon contain Techron. NOT sure about
Shell, Gulf, Hess, etc. (You DO know what Techron is, right?). EXTREMELY im-
portant additive, to keep valves, combustion chamber, etc., clean!!! The wa-
ter problem's hard to keep under check, 'cause of many factors involved, ES-
PECIALLY human negligence.

Alright, so I'm in NJ for the next couple months on business from FL. So I decided to look at the gas receipt. Well the middle eastern who filled the tank put regular in it even though I told him loud and clear Vpower! So this explains it. I'm on empty right now and am going to Hess. I also got some octane booster that I'm throwing in. I hate not pumping my own gas. Can't wait to get back to FL (self service ) The car drove like royal SH*T when I would give it full throttle. Like it was cutting out or so. Will update after the fill up. Hope I get there, cars says 20 miles DTE, LOL.

There are still full service stations around? Bad gas FTL. For FI cars, it can be a disaster...

I wouldn't consider it full service. In Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas. I have to sit helplessly in my car as some idiot, usually around 18 and either high, or drunk pumps gass into my tank. Puting the wrong gas in is just one of many problems. They like to dump it down the side of your car, ram the nozzle into the side of your car, and slam the plastic cap around on your car. These guys only make minimum wage so they have no incentive to be careful.

Bad gas? Possible but I doubt it. Owners take precautions to see that water does not get into tanks. The tanks are sealed.

what? if his symptoms started after filling up the tank THEN IT IS BAD GAS. i had the same situation with a 2000 accord v6, filled up to half a tank with 89 octane from SHELL also, got on the interstate and the car started to sputter(very well maintained i might add), had it towed to the honda dealership and they drained the tank, replaced one plug and a coil due fouling from the gas/water and the car ran like new again

One day I put 15 into my tank, and it was empty 5 minutes later... I had to go get more.

Probably a long shot, but I've heard that petrol that is stored for long periods of time loses it's octane points. So if your car has been running on high octane petrol and it gets old trashy crap, you'd expect it to underperform. Any truth to this?

well we will have to see. I bought the car from an Acura dealer 2 months ago and its in mint condition with only 15,000 miles. I called to make an appointment for them to check a few things out.
Cd player skips like crazy when cold
transmission make a ratteling when clutch isn't depressed
and this issue which we believe is gas related.

Just a FYI, in the owners manual it indicates anything less than 91 octane is to be used a temp fuel (if last resort) to get to the nearest gas facility. Using full throttle will cause the knock sensors to trigger and loss of power will occur. Engine damage is possible as well. Minimal throttle shall be used as well as minimal low octane fuel. That answers my question.

I've had a tank of bad gas as well, In an 04 Armada though. I was in the middle of a trip from Miami to Atlanta when i had to stop for gas. Literally 2 minutes out of the rest stop where i filled up the car began to sputter and then shut off. Towed it back to the gas station and got the bad gas siphoned out and replaced, after that the car ran like a champ.

You CAN get a bad tank of gas, it's unlikely, but very possible.
