It will do very little to nothing at at all to improve horsepower. Yes it will help, but not so that you will notice. It does give you the advantage of cleaning and reusing the filter, but of course you need to buy the cleaning kit.

A cone type K&N application with cold air would perform better than the box filter replacement.

Seen Stillen do a dyno on a Maxima with a clean Factory filter and then K&N panel..
3 horsepower gain..
So should see 4-5 horsepower with Z..
But only a dyno will tell......

I have seen sporadic reports that K&N filters can at times foul Mass air sensors with the oil. Not sure how accurate these reports are tho. Just wondering if anyone on this forum has had such an issue

 

Everyone has their opinions, but I cannot stand these filters. I tried them in my Toyota vehicles. They did work quite well while they were in my vehicles. However, if you ever want to go back to original (which I did because the increased airflow was noticeably noisier inside the vehicle), you *may* suffer the same problem I did... My engine check light came on. It came on because the computer noticed a difference in air flow and registered it. The check light caused me about a $100 in charges from the dealer, as they also had to take out and clean the air-flow sensor... it had massive oil buildup from the filter.

In chevrolets I have gone back to stock with no problem.
As far as the oil problem, don't over-oil it, just a light mist is fine and won't foul things.
The Z seems to have a cai already from some of the video I have seen and I think the filter only should be sufficient.
Yes, its a little louder in the car, but I like the intake sound.

I just put a k&n clone on my s-10, its a hot air intake type setup, and it makes a noticeable difference. Diff will probably be minimal on the Z, but I really like k&n's

They last forever, I had a 3" cylinder one, that I used on 2 integras, a Z-28, an S-10 and a Blazer, just kept moving it everytime we got a new car.

 

I've heard reports of fouled MAF sensors too on the Maxima 5th gen boards. (I have a 2002 SE). I put a stillen cone filter on my maxima and the sounds is absolutely amazing. I LOVE it. I havent had any check engines lights, or bbad mafs, but I made sure my filter was not over oiled, and even patted it a bit with cloth before installing.

My biggest worry with the stillen/k&N combo is that it is letting more air in, and although that is partly due to a larger surface area, it is also due to larger holes in the filter material. But then again, I only keep cars for a few years, so there is not much need to worry.

I wonder if the problem I had wasn't really the K&N filters, but the fact that my Toyota Tacoma sensed the loss of air-flow when I went back to stock and did the right thing by indicating there was a perceived problem. From there, the dealer maybe just charged me $100 to reset the check-light? That would suck.
