HR, in town gas mileage experiment, thanks to the high gas prices....

I took my 07Z from San Antonio, Tx to Lake Charles, LA with cruise control at 90mph for the majority of the trip and averaged 24mpg, and that was when I had it stock. I now have a STILLEN long tube intake on, but have not tested it on a long trips. I do agree with most of the replies though, it's hard not to get on the pedal in the Z, it just calls to you to put the pedal on the floor. Considering that the Z performs better than a Mustang GT and gets better mpg I believe that for the kind of car the Z is it actually gets decent mpgs.

Not to bad of a quest.
2 years ago I did the same type of quest but with an SUV doing 80% city driving.
It was a 1995 Ford Explorer. I was avg about 17-18 almost every time I filled up. It was 16 miles each with a total possible if I hit every light wrong of 38 stops with posted speed limits of no less than 50. So this being bad for anyone MPG because of the start stop thing. So I was perfectly happy in doing 17-18, but I had to have more.
So its the dead of summer, with avg's that year about 98-99. The 3 weeks I tried this out on had 15 days 100+ temps (bad luck for me).
Rules:
Roll up the windows
turn off the A/C
keep the RPM's below 1750 of accelerating on streets less than 55 mph
2200 rpm on 55+ mph
No going past 63 mph (unless going down a hill)
Holding the gas (aka if going down hill I would go faster, if uphill I would go slower. One point in my trip a hill took me to less than 55 mph in a 65 mph area )
I managed to get 25.8 mpg out of that dang thing. I felt totally accomplished in that fact that I got it to that point. Nice thing too was losing about 30 pounds as well (if I included the water weight loss daily it would be 50, but as soon as ya drink water it comes back… lol). Inside car temps where regularly in the 130's (thank god for a white SUV, sadly it sat in the sun all day).
Not bad of a 95 explorer where its top rating was 20 mpg highway according to the stickers. Bet if it was a strait highway trip under the same rules I would have gotten 30+

I have a 2008 altima 2.5L with a CVT and I average 31mpg highway. I have no idea how you guys are getting almost 30mpg in the Z. People with the 3.5L in the Altimas are complaining about gas mileage. I am averaging 23 mpg in my Z but thats driving it pretty hard.
I tried everything to get better gas mileage in my old truck and it didn't work. If you want better gas mileage get a car with a small 4cyl engine.

In town, with concious driving, interesting shifting, and occasional spurts of wildness, I am getting 23mpg... 2007 350z... Highway at reasonable cruise speeds (70-90) I have been getting around 28... Dual Fujita intakes are my only Mod.

I am thinking I would only gain 2+ mpg in the Mada though, as it weighs around 5,500 lbs.

My average: 18.3
But - average mph is only 23. I do not drive TOO hard - but i can thank the stop and go traffic in Northern Texas....
Strange enough....my '09 Murano - 20.5mpg. Same drivers - same habits...

At least you guys have a V6 they tend to be more efficient (in terms of gas) than the I6 that I have in my BMW. I avg 22-23 mpg in my car, and the best ive gotten out of it is 24.8 My trip is 40% highway and 60% street now; coming home it’s more than likely 70% street
So you guys be thankful for a V6, at least its possible to do better.

Cruise Control factor
I was driving from Sea Isle City NJ to Winslow NJ, about an hour and 15 min drive. I was on cruise control most of the way at about 50mph. By the time I got home my mpg were 30.2. It was a 68 mile trip
Without resetting I decided to have some fun, accelerating to 60 at a couple lights on a highway type road near me, took it down to about 26 after doing this 3 or 4 times for about 10-15 minutes in a span of 5-10 miles.
Its all in how you drive the car, especially in how you accelerate. Slow acceleration and driving 45-50mph for extended time = best mpg.
Then again, why buy a sports to do that?

Better than expected milage
I commute 68 miles, each way, 2-3 days a week. 64 miles of this is on I-680/280. I leave early (by 6AM) to beat the main crush. If I can keep sailing at a comfortable 75-80 MPH I generally get 27.0-27.5 MPG for the freeway portion. A few weeks ago I stayed at 75 or less and got 28.5 MPG.
I'd like to see what I can get at 65. . . but it 's very difficult not to DRIVE this car whenever possible.
As soon as I hit surface streets with stoplights, the mileage plummets. Driving around town, sensibly, it is difficult to get 20MPG.
The car is 16 months old and has 32k.

I just made a trip from the Seattle area back home to Modesto CA. Mostly running on I-5. The whole trip was about 840 miles. Averaged 70 MPH and 26.9 MPG. Was a little slower and 26.7 on the way there (Caught Portland rush hour on Thursday and had about 45 minutes of stop and go) Not bad considering the car is rated 19/25 MPG. I didn't drive it gently and there was up and down and curves in the mountains Also got to run with another silver Z for a bit. Someone with a personalized plate. Think it was Jena's Z.

Don't know about you guys, but I bought my G for a purpose, and trying to save gas wasn't one of them. Nothing wrong with trying to save gas, but you guys are doing it in the wrong car. Just my 2 cents.

I tried Vee-tec's way and it definitely did help. I was seeing 27mpg with mixed city driving. City and Highway. Now driving only 5 miles to work and home on back streets, my mileage has dropped a lot to 17 mpg. I am having trouble gettting it back up since I haven't touched any highway yet this tank.
